Free Agents I think we should sign

Hey y'all, i'm looking at the Free Agents for 2023 and I think here are some of the players we should pursue. Let me know your thoughts!

  1. Josh Hart (PG/SG, Player Option) - No question. He might have been bad against the Miami series but we were a different team when we acquired Josh Hart. He was a huge part of that winning streak.
  2. Donte DiVincenzo (SG, Player Option) - Donte is earning 4.6m and it's going to be tough for Golden State to retain him due to their tax scenario. He shot .397 from downtown on 5.3 attempts so his shooting will definitely help us. He also isn't too shabby as a defender. Also, he knows how to play with Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart since he is also from Villanova.
  3. Seth Curry (PG, UFA) - Seth is another name i'm thinking. He can shoot and We all know that playing Jalen for 40+ mins nightly isn't sustainable. He can be another backup guard next to Quick.
  4. Cameron Johnson (SF, RFA) - This might be a long shot as I think Nets will match any offer we do but we should still give an offer to this guy IMO. Career .393 shooter from downtown on 5.6 attempts per game. His shooting plus length will be nice.

They obviously need to and will keep Hart.

I don't see how DiVincenzo fits with Grimes and Hart on the roster, but he's definitely a good player.

I suspect Obi will be traded and a large chunk if not all of the 12 mil they have to spend will be on a backup 3/4. Maybe Jalen McDaniels. Would love Harrison Barnes but I think he'll get more than what we can spend.

BroadwayBully:NYCBX: The Bronx•

We need shooters and Thibs isn’t going to a 12 man rotation.

14
NtLmr95:15: 15•

Cam Johnson is a deadeye shooter with legit Playoff experience and elite length that we need on the wing.

Steal him from BKN by any means. Randle also gotta apologize to Cam for their beef in PHX too lol

48
nofapbbby:Randle1: Julius Randle•

It would be hilarious if Cam played with Randle after that lol

16
NtLmr95:15: 15•

Body language experts are salivating at the thought of breaking down Cam-Randle's dap-and-eyerolls per 36 over the season lmao

16
nofapbbby:Randle1: Julius Randle•

😂😂

Body language experts are probably rewatching every Randle interview to see his body language

7
arvs17OP:Jennifer: Jennifer Aniston•

He id an RFA so it might be tricky. I feel Nets will match any offer.

5
NtLmr95:15: 15•

How much is too much? Cam would fill a huge need for us even if he'd cost a premium.

Whatever bag the Knicks were gonna throw away IQ they should give to Cam.

6
yslultra:Leon3: Don Leon•

The Knicks have no money to sign players from other teams. It'll be almost impossible for us to sign Cam. He's pretty much guaranteed to stay with the Nets as long as they wanna keep him, which they do.

1
NtLmr95:15: 15•

Some money frees up if we deny Rose his team option and Josh Hart denies his player option.

Realistically, we are doing a sign-and-trade to get the talent we need. Make an offer BKN can't refuse 🤷🏾‍♂️

1
GoldenBoyRecords•

It would have to be a sign /trade

1
Strange-Committee-55:bobby2: Bobby's Knick Hat•

If we do get cam Johnson I would start him over Barrett lol

-3†
NtLmr95:15: 15•

Lmao chilllll. Grimes is definitely hitting the pine before Barrett.

Brunson-RJ-Cam-Randle-Mitch would have good spacing and great length defensively.

But I'd love to see Brunson-Grimes-Cam-Randle-iHart for maximum spacing potential.

4
Sparrow_Wilson:Quickley: Immanuel Quickley•

Just working out how we fit Divencenzo into the rotation. I guess we could trade Obi and then have RJ/Hart play the backup 4 minutes

15
JacesAces•

I don’t think we should run such a tight ship next year on the rotation. I think we should work in some load management and occasionally mix it up between 9-11 on the rotations. That way come playoffs, (1) we aren’t gassed, (2) we know what guys on our bench can do if called upon due to injury, foul trouble, or for adjustments.

Mostly #2… like if we actually gave Evan some run during the season, maybe we could have trusted him for some spot minutes against the Heat when they were daring us to shoot (instead of us all wondering why/if).

35
GoldenBoyRecords•

Did you forget who are coach is

16
Sparrow_Wilson:Quickley: Immanuel Quickley•

It's a 9 man rotation but apart from Brunson & Randle no one really plays huge minutes. They're also young so there's really no excuse for any of them to be gassed come the playoffs. I also think extending it to 10 would cause guys like Quickley/Hart/Grimes to be playing close to 20mpg again, which they would kick off about

7
Truck219•

We gave Evan run. All last year when we missed the playoffs. And to start this year at 10-13. People still think it’s a coincidence we started playing great ball once Thibs shortened the rotation smdh

0
JacesAces•

Yes I know we played him. We were playing Reddish too. Shortening the rotation helped. But for the last 7 months he played what… 1-2 times, barely? Half of this board was suggesting we give Evan a look against the Heat when we couldn’t buy a bucket. That’s my concern because by that point, idk if anyone had any clue if he was capable. We were so rigid on the 9-man. Thibs was on the hot seat and he pressed on the one thing that worked. I don’t blame him but I think we need to be a little more experimental next year.

1
Truck219•

Problem was Evan didn’t shoot well in those first 23 games. He finished the year 34% from the field and 31% from three. And his defense is atrocious so he literally brought nothing to the table in what was not a small sample size. To play him is taking away from another bench player’s minutes, making it even harder for said player to get in a rhythm

1
Justinbiebspls•

you think players being gassed was a factor in the playoffs??????

-1
Madking1980•

They weren't gassed. They were outplayed. They couldn't hit open shots.

6
Justinbiebspls•

yeah that's why i was incredulous at that take

1
JacesAces•

I can’t tell what you’re asking… but my main point is to see what guys on our bench are capable of.

In 7-game series, these battles become games of adjustments. We cannot roll with a 1-size fits all approach with this roster. You can only do that when you overwhelm the opposition with talent, which isn’t the route we’re taking. We can make those adjustments with the 9 guys we have, but it is a lot easier to do it with depth. When we had injuries we just tightened the rotation further, going from 9 down to 7 man rotations at times.

If guys go down, I want to know who I can call up from the bench. Or if teams are adjusting us and forcing us to go outside of our routine, I want versatility off the bench. I don’t want the playoffs to be the first time we are trying things, that’s not the place for experimentation. That’s what the regular season is for.

2
nofapbbby:Randle1: Julius Randle•

We had a strict 9 man rotation he can fit

1
spreerod1538•

He played some PG when curry was hurt and is a great shooter.. we can find a place for him in a potential 10 man rotation..

1

The thing about hart is that I hate him next to rj

12
theepicpander:KnicksA4: NYK Token•

Our starting lineup is fine with grimes. Our bench is the problem.

3
Madking1980•

I can't see how you trust Barrett and Randle at this point. Yea, they should get us to the playoffs, but every playoff series will be a giant question mark.

-8
mouga68•

I think rj earned our trust. Hes still young but showed excellent improvement from 2 years ago to this year. Yes he had a few dude games but he had more good than bad, and I think that'll continue to improve. Wheras Randle on the other hand has yet to show a fraction of his regular season aptitude in any postseason.

2
Dragon-Bender:Walt2:•

Ya Hart doesn’t fit well in our starting unit which has terrible shooting. He fits great next to IQ Hartenstein and Obi though which need a physical driver.

I hope we realize his limitations and don’t give him a crazy deal

3
electric_creamsicle:Baker: Ron Baker•

$13m player option that he's probably going to waive. I think something around $15-17m is likely and worth it. His PER obviously doesn't compare well to other 2/3s in the league but it's obvious he has a lot more impact than his numbers show.

1
Dragon-Bender:Walt2:•

Ya I’m hoping we can chisel him down a bit with a longer deal I feel like 4/60 is fair hopefully Leon sneaks a TO option in there also

Basically give him DRoses money and next year give IQ Fournier money

2
The_MadStork:Walt1:•

Forget free agents, we should keep Hart and IQ and then explore how to use Fournier and Rose + picks + maybe Obi and other young guys in the trade market.

8
theepicpander:KnicksA4: NYK Token•

rose has a team option i believe

1
electric_creamsicle:Baker: Ron Baker•

And there's 0 shot we pick it up considering it's $16m for a good veteran influence on the bench. I love Rose but we should let him go to a team that could give him some minutes just like we did with Taj.

7
Poopyshart33•

There is way more than a zero percent chance we pick it up. A 16m expiring contract is a fantastic trade chip.

3
electric_creamsicle:Baker: Ron Baker•

I'm not going to pretend to know how salary caps work but considering we have contracts to pick up and plenty of assets to trade I don't really see a reason to risk it unless there's a guaranteed sign and trade. Why would another team go in on a sign and trade when they could just let the Knicks waive and pick him up for the vet minimum instead?

1
mount_and_bladee•

Buddy Hield

1
cesarjulius•

i don’t want to read anything about adding any guys unless it comes with an explanation of who is out of the rotation to make room for them. cam johnson on a sign and trade for one or two of our rotation players would be great.

7
nofapbbby:Randle1: Julius Randle•

I’d be shocked if the Nets let that happen though

4
cesarjulius•

me too. but the nets are in a bad place where they either have to make a huge move or blow it up. their best chance for success is a miracle resurgence of ben simmons, even if it’s just to trade him. their roster construction is a fucking mess.

3
nofapbbby:Randle1: Julius Randle•

I don’t think they’re nearly in that bad of a place with Mikal, Cam, and a potential Ben Simmons coming back.

Ben is another player who got saddled with injury and gets no remorse. He’ll eventually go back to his past form watch it happen

-9
cesarjulius•

his past form as in three seasons ago? assuming full health, which we have no reason to assume, is still be surprised if he came back as a winning player. injured for two seasons there’s not a lot you can work on. shooting free throws is one of the few things that he could have worked on if he wanted to come back and contribute. i wouldn’t be shocked if he played zero more nba games. he seems to hate it.

4
mount_and_bladee•

He will never be a valuable NBA player again. Probably out of the league after the next (short) contract he gets

1
slickrickiii:Walt2: Clyde So Fly•

Gary Trent jr?

5
KingJoe7-123•

Thats what we hope Grimes can develop into

4
slickrickiii:Walt2: Clyde So Fly•

Honestly hoping Grimes can become even more

3
Bababooey98:Brunson: Brunson•

Grimes is already a better defender and passer than Trent.

7
KingJoe7-123•

Ceiling would probably be Desmond Bane if we’re being honest which is FANTASTIC.

1
slickrickiii:Walt2: Clyde So Fly•

Hard to compare his ceiling to a player who’s game is still evolving/is years off of his ceiling. But I can see them having a similar career path

3
michaelobriena•

Nah. Not really a fan of picking up guys that the other fan base hates. Raptors can’t wait to get rid of this guy, for a reason.

1
Chr1s78987x:Mitch2: Mitchell Robinson•

Alec Burks makes a lot of sense. He was great here and plays defense while shooting 40% on threes almost every year. Bogdan bogdanovic is really good and would be a great starter too.

4
Okieant33:Mason1: Mase•

Bring Alex back at all costs. The bench withbRose, IQ, him, and Obi was our best lineup last season

1
spaceninj•

Is this assuming we don't keep IQ and Obi?

2
T-Bills•

People in here have been trotting out that D+ CBS thing all season and then guy played shook for 10 games and got hurt all of a sudden it's like IQ who?

7
nofapbbby:Randle1: Julius Randle•

This fanbase isn’t used to a good season and is back to “draft time, trade everything and blow it up”

10
DurantsAltAccount:Melo7: Easter Melo•

This what happened two years ago. Same thing happened post-Pacers series. This team was a mistake and one of RJ/Randle showing up from a game 7 to go to the ECF. Maybe they should only make moves that objectively improve the team but hey, let’s trade everyone after drastically exceeding expectations. Maybe they can end up with blowing money on the 2023 iteration of Fournier, Kemba, Burks, Noel!

2
Type-Alpha•

I actually really like the idea of having seth curry as the backup pg. we def need 3pt shooting

2
explicitreasons•

You don't want to keep quickley?

-1
Type-Alpha•

We can just run, brunson-curry, rj at 2 or 3, and grimes play 3 and quick and hart can backup either position. That should be fine

1
Hot-Turnover4883•

The playoffs showed we need a veteran backup PG

2
jwillyk2121•
  1. Pascal Siakam
2
OutsidePrior2020•

at what cost? thought the same with OG, but both are going to cost and even though the only real untouchable is brunson, what would we really be willing to give up?

1
jwillyk2121•

Randle & a couple picks (or Randle + any combo of Mcbride/Obi/Fournier)

1
Japanese_Mamba•

Promote thibs to gm and get a new coach

2
Okieant33:Mason1: Mase•

Ask Minnesota how good Thibs was as GM

3
RichHomieLon:Melo6: 3 to the Dome•

I mean, minnesota also is a poverty franchise

1
Okieant33:Mason1: Mase•

They are but Thibs was GM there and wasn’t good at it

3
vman90265•

I think a stretch big would fully unlock julius and take brunson and rj to huge levels. These dudes with open space in the paint would be unguardable. Give me Brook, Myles Turner, or even a Porzingis reunion.

2

Cam actually sounds nice nice. We need a shooter, only problem is that he plays way too much ISO ball and his defense is nonexistent.

1†
GoldenBoyRecords•

Yea that’s not accurate Cam is a solid team defender. Our entire offense is iso ball what do you mean lol

10
DrizzleJesus:softee: Mr. Softee•

Cam is a lowkey a beast on the weak side help. really athletic and a good shot blocker. Too weak to defend physical guys at the 4 though.

2
GoldenBoyRecords•

I’d put Cam at the 3. Slide RJ to the 2. Cam is a nice piece with hood potential and gives us another shooter

1
ITAVTRCC•

You are thinking of Cam Thomas, also on the Nets

7
mteep:RJ2: RJ Barrett•

(Some names I like for us are)

Trade options

-Alec Burks 1 year left $10 million

-Gordon Hayward 1 year left $30 million

-Monte Morris 1 year left $10 million

(Some free agent options)

-Kendrick Nunn

-re-signing Josh Hart

-Yuta Watanabe

-George Niang

-Jeff Green

1
angdiddy67•

No way cam and Julius play on the same team

1
RichHomieLon:Melo6: 3 to the Dome•

why the fuck would we keep randle lmao

1
angdiddy67•

😂

-1
Geep1778:wutang: Wu Tang•

Donte And Hart for sure if we can get em both. Both are excellent offensive rebounders and play a similar game but Donte is a better shooter and can bring us the Golden State secret sauce recipe 🙌🏻

1

i was thinking about donte divincenzo this morning lmao, definitely an intriguing option

1
ILiftBIunts•

Royce Oneal … Jae Crowder
