What a way to ruin a game (X4)

(Read the edit, I made this post when I was tired and lost patience. Great game and I’ll git gud)

Sorry for this being complaining but I just need to vent.

Recently I’ve been getting into the Megaman series (specifically X) for the first time, and I have finished X1 and 2 and skipped 3 because I heard 4 was fantastic. And for 95% of the game, it is. The Mavericks are incredibly fun to fight. But that last 5% is some of the worst experience I’ve ever had playing a video game.

So I was having a massive blast with Rockman X4 (because the english VA is awful), until I got to Sigma and I absolutely despise this game now. I spent an hour on this stupid fight and I still can’t beat it. Even with Max E-Tanks it’s unfun. The first phase is a total boring pushover while the second onwards is just bad. The second phase is just unfair since Sigma constantly spams his stupid 4 boomerangs when his sythe is in the ground basically guaranteeing that I take damage because there’s barely any room to dodge.

The third phase is just tedious garbage with 2 health bars that have really unfun attacks and insta-kill spikes in 2 instances plus the head that sucks you up and shoots garbage at you is immensely hard to dodge. It doesn’t help that the lighting head attack is also extremely irritating.

I understand that it’s the final boss and it’s supposed to be hard, I understand that’s it’s an older game, I also understand that there’s hitless runs of this fight, but having to fight all 8 mavericks just to get back to the annoying fight isn’t fun, it’s tedious. Plus after the first phase, it’s just incredibly unfun and tedious. I would have been more forgiving if the game saved right before Sigma but the entirety of this fight has basically killed my interest of ever finishing this game and my chances of doing a run with Zero (edit: for now, I’ll probably get back to it) which is a shame since I was having a lot of fun with the game up until this point.

Edit: I had zero clue that Sigma’s Sythe could be manipulated to be thrown into the wall so I’ll try that the next time I play. This game is still fantastic, I just wish that I didn’t have to get through the 8 Mavericks every time even though the weaknesses trivialize most of them. I’ll probably come back to this game in a few weeks. Also considering that I’ve played 3 X games in a row (X1, 2, and 4) without a break with another game instead, caused me to get some fatigue and wrote this as a result.

Edit 2: thanks for the encouragement and advice! I will admit that this post is pretty dramatic considering that I know now what to do in the fight and me making a mountain out of a molehill.

Edit 3: I WON AGAINST HIM

Sigma can be super hard until you realize how to manipulate the scythe toss in phase 2 and figure out how to deal with Earth and Lightning Sigma.

Practice dodging Lightning’s electro ball attack and try to trigger Earth Sigma’s wind attack by staying close to the wall when he’s spawning.

I’m personally on the side of X4 being overrated, but I still thoroughly enjoy it even if it is a bit too easy (every boss suffering Spark Mandrill syndrome kinda sucks).

Thanks for the advice

These games are meant to be difficult, especially for a newer player,

Don’t give up! You can do it

Thanks, I’m probably going to take a break from it however since the new Zelda is out and after almost 3 games, I’m probably starting to feel burnt out. I’ll probably come back to it later.

Also in hindsight, I had zero clue that you can manipulate where Sigma’s Sythe goes so when I come back to it I’ll try that route

The second phase for Sigma is pretty funny because it is so difficult until you change one thing and suddenly doing it damageless is easy, it was amazing when I found it out. This post feels dramatic though, especially saying you may just not like 2D platformers after adoring the rest of the game.

I don't think Sigma is unfair here so I don't think it ruins the game, I still think X1 sigma is the hardest of the first four games.

Oh wait you haven't played X3... Hope you have fun with that final boss :)

Yeah, I was pretty tired and frustrated when I made the post so it came off as pretty dramatic. I’ll probably come back to it sometime, I think me playing 3 X games in a row is starting to set in some kind of fatigue.

During Phase two, if you get him to toss the scythe into the wall, he will do his easily avoidable laser shot instead of the boomerangs.

Whenever you have trouble with a Megaman boss (or from any videogame in general) you can always look up a no damage playthrough on youtube and see what strats people are using. It helped me with the second fase in this boss back in the day, since I had no idea you could just jump through Sigma when he does his laser eyes (this game is much more permissive with its hitboxes than you'd think, but you'd have no idea since it never tells you). Once you see someone else perform it flawlessly, it's then just a matter of learning to execute those tricks, and you're no longer aimlessly fumbling around. I would've NEVER beaten Megaman 7's bullshit final boss if youtube didn't exist.

Most of the times (like this one) bosses are way actually easier than how they look on 1sts tries, its basically all about understanding a gimmick and build a strategy around that (not saying anything cuz i think ill be better if u find out urself, and i mean, internet is full of that stuff).

Said that, dont give up, this serie can trow u way worse shit x)

You're gonna have a blow-out with X6

Yeah

Especially if this game that is possible without upgrades or being touched is giving you this much trouble

Either character can kill the heads before they attack, you can also use either character to destroy the scrap barrage to keep it from damaging you. Which character are you using?

The Earth head is weak to Ground Hunter, and the Plasma Charge Shot one-taps the heads.
