I ran a call on a system that had Carene 7 listed as the refrigerant. An old resi split that had a semi hermetic compressor in it.

Leemursk8•

Was the compressor painted yellow?

5
HVAC_instructor•

Nope it was black

When you replace the unit, you take the name plate off. Put magnets on it and stick it in your home toolbox.

General Electric sold a long time

I always look to see who's really making what GE licenses their logo for these days. Those GE badged, Haier produced Concords with all the Allied serial numbers filed off sure do have nice panels, but hell if I'll pay the mark up of two extra hands being out for a prettier entry tier.

Oh, I’d have to Google that one for sure. 22 or 12 I’d have no idea

MonoCholoroDiFluoroMethane 1C-2F-C aka. CFC-12 which is R-12. Could be wrong, I’m just a second year.

13
ReferHvacGuy•

Sure maybe, I’m a journeyman and just recently finished my ticket, there’s really no reason to memorize this shit lol

7
Excusemecomagain•

Just looked it up it R-22 wtf. Doesn’t make any sense to me but who cares when you can just google it.

Some1-Somewhere•

The formulas for the numbers is intensely stupid, but yeah, R-22.

Each of R12 > R22 > R32 swaps a chlorine for a hydrogen, and has two fluorines.

4
RedneckChinadian•

not quite... R12 is Dichloro-difluoromethane I believe.

I love seeing these relics from before everything was junk.

I'm standing in the walkin cooler of a pizzeria wondering what the hell a "Bohn" refrigeration unit is.

Now I know.

R12 right?

9
mechanical_marten•

22

Edit: Should have added 12 is dichlorodifluoromethane, 22 has one less chlorine.

It just proves that shrinkflation has been going on for ages. Newer product with half of the chlorine.

R123 is where it’s at. You can pour it in a cup at 80 degrees and it’ll just sit there as long as the cup isn’t styrofoam. It’ll also kill you fairly quickly.

Same here. I had an older guy that I worked with that called refrigerant giggle juice because he witnessed a few teenagers huffing refrigerant from a system and giggling their asses off. He thought that the system had a leak that he just couldn’t find. Well he found it.

1
kriegmonster•

We take care of a property with two early 80s GE gaspacks. It had 4, but the other two were replaced because the exhaust pipe rusted and was leaking exhasut into the supply air.

3
Dangerous-Sir777•

12 has to be expensive as shit, huh?

2
Nerfo2•

That an R22 unit.

8
thaeli•

Ironically, 22 is more expensive than 12 these days.

2
Nerfo2•

Is it ironic, though? There's no demand for 12.

1
thaeli•

As a classic cars enthusiast who remembers the R-12 phaseout panic and hoarding, it's been satisfying to see R-12 prices come back down to earth. Maybe ironic wasn't quite the right word.

1

I hear propane has about the same pt chart as R12. Not as safe around a torch though.

I think bohn quit using the name bohn aluminum and brass corp in the 50s. Bohn lives on now as bohn refrigeration as part of heatcraft after multiple m/a’s.

I’m surprise it’s so readable.

This bad boy is stuck up between two ceilings. The original ceiling to the building above it and this is resting on my makeshift platform right above the “new” ceiling. Not a lot of exposure to anything other than air.

1
dragos68•

Like someone said, if you replace it take the plate and attach it to your tool box that’s a rarity now a days.

1
TheSpecialist20•

its not old. its just r-22 smdh.
