Writers strike- what am I not getting?

Question / Discussion

Hey guys, so I’m usually very pro union and I supported the IATSE strike because on set workers were really getting treated terrible. (I realize this is a very hot take and am probably wrong in the views I’ve formed based on most people being against this take, but I really want to hear all the arguments)

But- Writers? Really? The only writers I know own million dollar homes and only work half a year and are managing to travel and picket during the strike with no financial problems.
The starting rate for writers I believe is triple digits for only half a year of work…

I feel like this is a group that has so much better pay and benefits than most of the rest of us, and some of what they’re asking for feels insane to me, like 6% residuals, 400% increasevs what studios are offering??? 10 writers per room? really???

Like I support the writers strike up to the point that streaming gets treated the same as film and television and isn’t used as an excuse to pay less. I also think people who don’t actually make the movies take waaaay too much money (CEOs and studio execs), like, yes more should go to the writers and everyone else.

But here’s my bone to pick- I see so many VFX and other workers losing their jobs, and unlike writers these people actually need to work all year to survive, and don’t get any of the benefits or pay or residuals that writers get.

It just feels like the wake of destruction is huge.

One of the complaints I see is that writers who are just starting off don’t get paid enough. Really? Wow welcome to how it is for literally everyone else starting off.

I guess I’m just tired of VFX getting treated like shit and having no protections yet people who are way more well off shutting everything down for everyone just so they can get more.

I’m also tired of other departments thinking they’re the most important aspects of making a film and soaking up all the residuals while so many vital departments that literally design the shots, fight sequences, effects, etc get left in the dust.

What am I missing? Maybe there’s something the writers are dealing with that I don’t understand that makes it worth it? I’m actually curious to hear everyone’s takes, I haven’t really gotten to talk to people about it because there’s so much tip toeing around this subject.

Your input would be much appreciated! Hopefully this can be more of a discussion than just me ranting haha
