Since NCAS is taking over, would you put off buying a j1172 EVSE?

In my case, I do have a couple of mobile EVSEs that can work in the various locations I park in.

I was about to buy an Emporia Level 2. However I already have a Tesla Mobile Connnector, and it seems counter productive to buy another device that may someday have to have an adapter.

I imagine that some manufacturers will start offering NACS replacement cables. But it's too early to be sure.

I guess it also depends on how often you think you'll be getting new cars.

All in all, a $400 EVSE is a pretty negligible cost compared to a new car.

Adapters are easily available and cheap

Adapters from J1772 to NACS are small and cheap.

Adapters to J1172 from NACS are not.

Get a J1772.

There's a law that all vehicles sold need to be able to charge via J1772. Tesla complies by giving away a free adapter. I doubt that law gets repealed.

Yeah

A law!!! Wonder how that’s going to work out for the rest of the world this ‘law’ doesn’t cover.

The implication was with all of the US brands being in the news, etc. While not stated, this is mostly a US issue.

Not really ONLY a US issue, it is after all NACS (North America Charging Standard).

Huh, I just assumed that Elon was arrogant and named it that out of hubris.

I have the Emporia charger, the charging cable can be replaced on it so I’d guess that at some point you can just buy the cable separately with NACS connection. If not… I’ll just spend another $399 whenever that day comes on a new one. It’s very competitively priced and works very well. Glad I went with this one and returned the Grizzl-E Smart I was previously using.

I literally just had a Wallbox delivered yesterday.

Do I return it? I have an X5 PHEV right now so I could probably survive off of L1. My wife's car comes off lease next summer and the plan was to transition her car to a BEV.

Yes, and get an Emporia. The savings will pay for three NACS adapters later.

Yes

“Taking over” hahaha. Nope

People forget that the Avcon Claw EVSEs were eventually converted to the J1772 connector as well. The signaling isn't changing.

We should be able to just swap the connector and keep the same EVSE. NACS and CCS are cross-compatible

1
tuctrohs•

Yes, but there are special tools needed to attach them. So that's why people are talking about swapping cables.

I said connector but I actually meant the whole cable

240v outlets will work with any charger with a suitable plug. I just use the mobile charger that came with my current car, and could swap that for any future charger for future cars.
