Borderline Personality Disorder: What the What?
Okay, first let me say that I am actually relatively skeptical of diagnoses, as the criteria change all the time. I'm not convinced that the distinction between BPI and BPII is as important as people make it sound, for instance. More importantly, I know this isn't a diagnostic resource. I'm going to find a therapist to consult with about this as well. But obviously you folks know more about this stuff and are better informed about it than the general public, so I just wanted to know how you felt.
I saw a post here recently that kinda fucked with my head (the double edged sword of r/bipolarreddit, i suppose). The post in question is here:http://www.reddit.com/r/BipolarReddit/comments/1424y7/cant_get_help_from_therapists_because_i_go_in/c798cf8. The part that fucked with me is "A few therapists told me off the record that they won't tell a patient they they are borderline, because it makes things worse and also that they would refer a borderline patient to someone else, because hundreds of hours of gameplaying frustrates therapists too."
I'd never actually even looked up BPD before I saw that, because my diagnosis is BPII, but you guys, it sounds JUST like me. Now I wouldn't say my pdoc is doing this, because he sees me for like 10 minutes every few weeks and barely knows me; frankly I need to find someone better. But it seems eminently plausible that my old therapist could have been witholding something like that. I have a real gift for dissociating and "gameplaying," and I know he observed at least once or twice that my habit is to avoid acknowledging or dealing with emotional issues by intellectualizing everything. I also PERFECTLY fit the description of identity disturbance. Reading about that aspect of BPD was surreal for me, it was just so familiar.
So now the rational part of my brain is saying, "this doesn't actually change anything, when you find a new therapist you can talk to them about it, just keep trying to get healthy," and the anxious, self-loathing part is saying "your therapist lied to you, you're sicker than you realized," and I'm just not quite sure what to think. I suppose I don't really have a specific question, but any insight you have would be great.
TL;DR: A recent thread on reddit made me wonder if my former therapist suspected but didn't tell me that I might have borderline personality disorder, and when I googled it I found it eerily accurate. Now I'm not sure what to think.
