Songs that Don’t live up to the intro…

Spoiler

What are some songs that don’t live up to their intro? Of course “Corduroy” comes to mind but if you had to make a list of your top three songs what would they be? My list-

  1. Crazy Train
  2. The Final Countdown
  3. I think O Fortuna has to be on here somewhere. I also considered Enter Sandman but that seemed a little iffy. Idk

“Crazy On You” - Heart

Good song, but nothing could live up to that beginning.

BazingaBois•

Nancy Wilson with one of the greatest "everybody clear out, I've got this" moments of all time with that intro.

I’ve seen her perform it live at a concert. It’s amazing.

Great choice

There’s many songs, but one that sticks out like a sore thumb to me is Kanye’s Father, Stretch My Hands Pt. 1. The beginning of it is awesome, after that, what the fuck

Tel3visi0nA Truly Sad Week In America + 2005 NBA Redraftables•

Wow amazing choice. That intro snippet “If young metro dont trust you…” into the Kid Cudi chorus had the internet in a chokehold. Then Kanye came in with that bleached asshole bullshit.

12
Gatorboyz33•

I remember the hype around the intro snippet back on Twitter was something else. Really was the first song I thought of when I saw the title of this thread

4

Counterpoint I really like the ' I wanna wake up with youuu' part

Lot of ppl forget that this was also the cudi and Kanye reunion iirc, a lot of meta meaning behind it. I fucking love that part.

1
BeeFe420•

This is such a good answer and tbh a lot of Kanye West songs are like that

Ben Simmons - Book of Basketball Intro

HoagieTwoFaceNBAhole•

RHCP- around the world. The intro is S tier but it’s just a C tier peppers song.

33
Liverpool510•

Good call. I love that song based on the intro alone.

RHCP’s Can’t Stop has an S tier intro and the whole song is great.

9
igotnocash•

I feel like this is true of most red hot chili pepper songs.

4
Yodelingondeeznutz•

Yep, Can’t Stop has the sickest intro and then falls off a cliff. Feel like AK’s vocals cause most of these issues.

6
TurkTurkleton0•

Yeah I think this also applies to By The Way

2
marrab22votes for tax reasons•

Ooo I'm a big Chili Peppers fan but yeah you're absolutely right. Kinda basic song outside of the intro and breakdown before the third verse

Great call

Reversing the bass and lead guitar was dope though

hey_nong_man•

Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out. Intro goes hard not really a fan of the rest.

Hard disagree

The chorus does meander a bit, but it does end on a strong note with a repeat of the initial drum riff

31
capellidellamorte•

The dance break at the end is epic. Ever at an indie or goth dance night when that comes on? Girls lose their shit

Edit: by end break I mean the middle right through the ending, thus meaning the entire song after the intro continues going hard.

10
SufficientFault790•

Outrageous response, respectfully. Never not seen the middle break go off. My hot take is Smells like teen spirit.

8
BooshAC•

Man that post intro riff and chorus is the most football chantable riff outside of Seven Nation Army!

3
tikitiger•

God I love this song.

Came here to say this.

1
chenbuxie•

This. I always skip it after the first few seconds.

Enter Sandman is great after the long intro.

Do Foreplay/Long Time by Boston count? Foreplay is a better song and Long Time feels 2 minutes too long.

28
NTylerWeTrust86•

BOOOOO! Intro is the worst part of Foreplay/Long Time

jgon85Chris Ryan fan•

Surprised Eye of the Tiger by Survivor isn’t on here

Starts off as the most inspiring guitar riff / drum and then loses the edge around the 2:20 mark

It never regains the energy at the end with the chorus

22
CyhawkboyOP•

That’s a good pick for sure.

Sweet Emotion by Aerosmith.

Good call

Money for Nothing by Dire Straits and it's not even close. Epic intro, shit song. Even tried bringing in Sting to save it (which many 80s artists did)

19
E_Fox_KellyReal CR Head•

Excellent pick

4
sperry20•

Yup. Think this might be the actual best song intro ever, and the actual song is just not good.

1
TwiceARunner•

when I’m out jogging and that song comes on my shuffle I automatically kick the pace up I can’t even help it

1
bctix•

the next episode. good song after the intro but fuck is that epic.

16
CocaineandPercs•

The ending is iconic.

10
E_Fox_KellyReal CR Head•

It’s a barbell track

2
d_1_z_z•

Welcome to the Jungle

14
KawhiComeBack•

My first thoughts also, can never top the highs of the build up. First 30 seconds is so awesome, even if the very start does sound like We Didn’t Start the Fire

1†
Dmbfantomas•

Baba O’Riley is up there, too.

13
euph31•

O Fortuna is a bad take

12
AdSingle6957•

Yeh that makes no sense. It builds and builds all through the piece. I'd say the intro is almost the least interesting part

1
CyhawkboyOP•

The first 30 seconds are the best part bro… sure it picks up at the end but the middle is a crescendo that doesn’t quite land the same as the opening.

1
WitchofFloyd•

Bulletproof by La Reux really falls off after the first minute

11
so-cal_kid•

Damn I love that song but you're prob right. It starts off so strong but it's pretty one note throughout. It probably needed an earlier break in the pace or shorter verses or something

8
KawhiComeBack•

‘Since you been gone’ and ‘I Will always love you’ kind of have the same thing

3
NTylerWeTrust86•

It's my favorite LZ song but Whole Lotta Love is a great first 3rd then falls off afterwards

9
so-cal_kid•

Whole lotta love is such a bizarre song. It has maybe my favorite guitar riff of that era and yet that middle breakdown section takes all the wind out of its sails. They musta been on some kinda acid trip while writing it

8
MattyShay•

does that include Willie Dixon?

3
capellidellamorte•

Baker Street - you’re expecting a quiet storm soul track and get some folkie cornball shit

In the Meantime by Spacehog - dude got to marry prime Liv Tyler on the strength of that intro and she left him by the time she heard the verse.

9
mkay0•

Strongly disagree on Corduroy, the bridge into the guitar solo is the best part. It just is!

The Gap Band - "You Dropped a Bomb on Me"

Great first minute but blows it's wad right off the top.

Outkast - "Gasoline Dreams"

Feels like a future classic off the top and with Andre's first verse and then Big Boi comes in and sort of deflates the song imo. It's not bad, but bitching about paying taxes and a buddy going to jail isn't the same as painting a picture of the future apocalypse that Andre is. And then Khujo just flat out sucks with zero fucking flow at all.

U2 - "Numb"

Always feels like a missed opportunity for a really great concept for a song. They just don't quite build enough of a song around it to hold together as a true single.

8
pojmalkavian•

Gasoline Dreams is a great pick. It's a lead song (not counting Intro) on Stankonia, it's heavy distorted guitar sound is thematically continuing right where the fucking great Chonkyfire finished off the previous album Aquemini and it starts so good... and it's simply not good by the end. Kind of like Stankonia feels for me, really good but falters halfway through.

4
Dmbfantomas•

Damn, I love the Chorus to Numb.

2
ID0ntCare4G0bknife_guy enthusiast•

There is no chorus to Numb. There's a bridge. But not really a chorus.

Part of why I don't think song works as well as it should.

2
Dmbfantomas•

Happy correction and admission of dumbness. I think my my brain had the “I feel numb!” stuff as an actual chorus. Listening back to it now, yeah, it just kinda happens a few times. I still like that, though.

2
ID0ntCare4G0bknife_guy enthusiast•

See...that's sort of the trick of the song. The memory of it is better than when you listen because there is no actual ear worm given to you. But you remember there being an ear worm after the fact because your brain separates out the layers of production.

But when I listen to the song in real time, it never delivers what I want it to.

But then a band like U2 has so many good singles, I guess they can afford one weird frustrating one that's kind of a mood collage instead of a structured song.

Mountain Song by Jane’s Addiction

7
Dmbfantomas•

Shit, Stop! Is up there too. Such a bad ass way to open a song/album.

3
Libertines18•

Black Betty

6

I actually like Spiderbait’s cover over the original. It’s a song that needs to go a little harder

7
The-Hopster•

Spiderbait rocks!
