Manager kind of blindsided me during scheduled personal meeting today.

I work in a primary care office, and my manager wanted to meet with me and the provider I work with about what I assumed was this patient rescheduling project she's asked me to work on. Instead they wanted to talk about how they've noticed a "change in my demeanor" the last few weeks.

They didn't say I was doing anything wrong or that I needed to change anything. Well, congratulations, you picked up on the fact that I'm tired of working 40 hours every single week and still living in abject poverty.

In the last few weeks I've learned I'm probably going to have to sell the home I've lived in since 2010 to pay my debts. And with the wage I'm paid I'll never be able to afford the rent increase getting an apartment would bring. I'm facing being unhoused and I've had the boot of capitalism crushing my neck relentlessly for the 20+ years of my adult life.

Fucking right my demeanor has changed. Needed a vent, thank you.

I hope you told your manager all of this and…”now how are you going to help me?” whole looking him dead in eye.

I should have, but a) I was too taken aback to say anything other than "it's personal" b) while it would've been nice to make them feel like shit, my manager knows how little I get paid and she's not in charge of raises, that's corporate, so nothing would've come of it other than making an awkward situation even worse.

OP don't sell. Beg, borrow, steal, shank a bitch, sell your blood to vampires plasma banks, start an OnlyFeets; just don't disabuse yourself of real property. From someone who's flirted vigorously with being unhoused, it's an anchor you need. The short-term gains aren't worth the long-term losses.

This. Talk to a legitimate credit counselor. There are a lot of predatory scam ones out there. In Rochester NY we have Consumer Credit Counseling of Rochester, at cccr.org. if you're not in Rochester, maybe they can point you to a reputable organization in your area. Do NOT sell your home if you can help it, paying rent will only make your financial situation worse in the long term. Can you refinance your mortgage or get a home equity loan?

I think I'm beyond options. I lost a pretty well paying job during the pandemic, got divorced shortly before the pandemic, and now I'm barely making half of what I used to. After my forbearance ended, I had to choose between making mortgage or credit card payments. I defaulted and got sued by the bank, and I'll be having my paychecks garnished soon. And I can't declare bankruptcy because I have too much equity in my home so I'd still be forced to sell the home to pay the debts. Believe me it's the last thing I want to do but it looks inevitable.

You have a mountain of credit card debt, a new car loan you defaulted on causing the car to be repo'd, thousands owed to a friend of yours...

You sound like the guy earlier in the week complaining they're tired of being broke while spending tens if thousand on video games.

You clearly make awful financial choices.

You need to learn to be responsible, you have children, get your shit together and start making smarter choices.

Is that better?

You're right, it's 100% bad decisions that led me here and nothing else. You know everything.
