[Subreddit Business] Results of the second poll

Pinned

Hi folks,

The poll on whether we black out again has concluded, and you can see the results here:
https://strawpoll.com/e6Z2876JwnN/results

The final result is approximately 71% in favor of reopening, and 29% in favor of another one-week blackout. Consequently, we are resuming normal operations. If anyone has any ideas or thoughts on whether to take any further protest actions, please feel free to discuss them here in this thread.

The only thing I'd say, aside from being grateful that the sub is finally back online, is be very careful about how you proceed with further protests.

It seems that the admins are getting more aggressive with shutting down more overt protest methods. r/dndmemes recently lost its head mod due to their NSFW protest. This doesn't look like something they're going to back down on. ASF isn't large enough of a sub to make a difference in the protests, but it is large enough that the admins will step in if we're too obvious.

Perhaps regular protest sticky posts and automod posts? Something that shows discontent without necessarily putting the sub in danger.

You hit the nail on the head. ASF just isn’t going to make a difference. For the blackout to succeed, the mods of r/television, r/nfl, r/entertainment, etc needed to not sell out the smaller subs the moment their own power was threatened by the admins. The mods who actually have leverage crossed the picket lines the moment their own authority was threatened and left you guys stranded. The protest was over from that moment on.

Thankful this sub voted so strongly in favour of business as usual

Glad this pointless protest is in the rear mirror, at least for this sub.

Anyone who wants to protest should just delete their account and leave Reddit. Sabotaging subs is neither fair nor right.

"No if you don't like Reddit you should just delete your account"

Damn right.

I had a longer response to the first posting of the poll results, but as most of what was said there wasn't repeated here, let me just say that I appreciate the mod team here and the sub and culture you've built. This place is fun, and I hope that the idiotic changes reddit made won't impact your lives too much.

I see no point to any further protest actions. Going NSFW will likely get the mods booted which I don't want. And anything else will just be useless.

No further protest actions. Move on with life.

Protests only work when they have an effect on something.

Reddit has show they are fully willing to remove any effect the protest has. the absolute most I can possibly see any protesting doing is making reddit have professional mods put in place on major subs.

That’s more a function of the conviction of those protesting than it is about Reddit/the thing being protested against.

As an example, if the majority of the Reddit user base walked out en masse then Reddit would absolutely cave. It’s not really up to Reddit how far the protest goes, and they absolutely have a limit at which point they will cave.

That said, the user base has made it pretty clear they aren’t willing to go that far, and that’s fine. I’m just responding to the implication that protests only work when the thing being protested against lets them work.

Fools. The true issue with democracy.

The best way to protest is to move to another site. Shutting the sub down without a way out will only lead to this result.

Most other subs have returned to normal. We should as well. The protest is over.

Anybody who feels differently should be boycotting reddit, but if you're reading this, you clearly haven't done that, so your convictions aren't as strong as you think they are.
