New Ranked Doubles Map: Immolate - Non-competitive?

Ranked

Has anyone played the new map added to Ranked Doubles called Immolate? The one with glowing trees you can jump on despite them not looking solid, a Skewer that makes you launch across the map to pick it up, a lift, drop wall, repulsor, countless blind ratting spots, and tons of places to fall or get repulsed off the level.

Am I alone in thinking it feels like a wacky social map that has no place in Ranked? The one in the social doubles playlist with the beautiful Japanese indoor gardens would make a lot more sense to me.

I could be missing something and it might actually be good if I learn it, that's why I'm asking for the thoughts of everyone here. But to me it just seems unreadable, unintuitive, full of social gimmicks, encourages ratty and cheesy play styles, and above all it's super ugly. And I'm not just salty, because I won the only game I played on it.

Thoughts?

This map is an absolute abomination. The ridiculous teleport/lift, the staircases without blockers that feel absurdly janky to traverse, equipment EVERYWHERE. Absolutely indefensible that this made it into ranked.

I completely agree. Visually, it's a 10x worse version of Uneeq's Annamite. When I first spawned I thought it looked like maybe it's designed around skill jumps. The first thing I said was I thought it looked like a parkour map. I haven't played it enough to be sure, but from my initial impressions it doesn't really even seem to have skill jumps. Just super exposed jumps off trees that visually don't even look like you can stand on them. There's very little lighting that cues you where you can go off spawn, there are walkable platforms that are so sloped you can't tell they're traversable, there's no indication which edges will make you fall to your death (who is taking the time to tiptoe to an edge and look down to see if they can jump mid-match?) and so on...

I just don't get it. If this was someone's very first forge map and they were asking for critique, I'd have a lot nicer things to say. But the fact that it's in Ranked is absurd.

Definitely a goofy map, dont get me wrong its fun, but definitely has some issues, the stairs for example (between top lift and overwatch) are super glitchy with mad screen shake. The repulsor plays and launch are fun gimmicks but definitely feels more like a fun social map then a ranked map

1
architect___OP•

Yeah I think if I got it in Social Doubles I'd think it was a fun time. When my CSR is on the line I'm not so forgiving. I really don't get how this made it to Ranked Doubles and not that much better Japanese one with OS in bottom mid.

One of my favorite maps in the playlist tbh. It was specifically made for 2v2, which you can't say about any other map in the playlist. I think it plays well. You don't need to hit the lift to get skewer. The traversal of trees and skill jumps is part of what makes it good. If you're falling off the map, that's on you for not knowing the map. Go into a custom game and mess around with it for 10 minutes or so to learn the jumps and you will enjoy it a lot more.

You don't need to hit the lift to get skewer.

Interesting, that helps, I guess you just time a slide or something?

The traversal of trees and skill jumps is part of what makes it good.

There are skill jumps? I've only seen basic jumps and things like the trees and the sloped broked floor thing. They don't require skill, they're just out in the open and not readable since they don't look at all solid. The mushrooms on that other forge map are a much better example of how that should be done.

If you're falling off the map, that's on you for not knowing the map. Go into a custom game and mess around with it for 10 minutes or so to learn the jumps

I actually didn't fall off the map at all. At one point I fell off the side and thought I was going to die, but I landed on floor below. That said, this is absolutely not a valid argument. There's a reason dev maps make it very obvious which pits will kill you. It's readable for first-time players. By your logic, every map could just be gray blockouts with no lighting and pits placed at random, half of which kill you, and you could just say "learn the map."

I know that's taking it to the extreme, but consider my example: I didn't even know they added more maps to Ranked Doubles. Is it really logical to expect players to look at the game list, find any maps they don't know, search them, bookmark them, and play a custom game in them to learn the ropes before jumping into Ranked? No, the simple solution is to design the map's visuals in a way that makes it very obvious which jumps are lethal and which are not. Here are a few examples of how that can be done with ease:

  • Put hip-height walls at all edges where you die if you fall off. If there is no half-wall, you can safely walk off.
  • Add red lights at the edges of death falls.
  • Add greenery around the periphery of the level, and put greenery on all the death ledges.

All that said, I'm sure you're right I'll enjoy it more with more play time. Getting better at anything is enjoyable. But as of now I still don't see what makes it good for competitive. It feels like baby's first forge map to me.

By far the only map in the entire Playlist that works for 2v2. Halos maps aren't built for 2v2 except this one.

1
UnggoyFarmer•

It ain’t perfect but I enjoy the verticality to it which a lot of infinite maps lack. Halo has always historically had several popular maps with verticality and several skill jumps but infinite kinda lacks that. Hoping we get more vertical maps down the line

1
architect___OP•

If you want a map with verticality that you can fall off of, just add Lockout.

Does this map really have skill jumps? I didn't see any, but of course I only played one game.

1
UnggoyFarmer•

Yup definitely several skill jumps but yea it would be nice to see some tried and true maps added into the rotation but fresh community made stuff is just a cool thing to see too

1
architect___OP•

Gotcha, I guess I'll have to look around.

I want the fresh maps added to Social. Let the tried and true ones be added to Ranked. For instance I'd play Arrival and that Japanese one Ranked, but not the dingy brown one with the cave and OS at the edge of the level opposite the Sniper.

1
The_Burnt_Waffle•

This is why I won't touch Ranked Doubles lmao

1
wiseguy187•

Really lol? You sure it ain't your guns? I get this map less than any in the Playlist.

ssevered_•

Believe it or not I prefer this map to Chasm. Worst map hands down

1
elconquistador1985•

The worst map I've played in Halo Infinite (social and ranked) is Salvation. Specifically, Salvation KOTH.

4
ssevered_•

Can’t recall which one that is, though I took a small sabbatical at the beginning of s3

1
elconquistador1985•

It was one of the first forge maps released in a playlist. It's the mostly vertical map with the teleporter to the top catwalk.

It's marginally ok for 1 flag. For KOTH, the team starting in the high room has the advantage on Hill 1. Then Hill 2 is a short walk from 1, and the first team to get there has a huge advantage. Then Hill 3 is literally a jump down into the room from Hill 2, it's basically in the same room. It's horrendously lopsided. Plus the team that starts high has the advantage for sniper, rockets, and camo.

It's this one: https://www.halowaypoint.com/halo-infinite/ugc/maps/e1d4a838-d686-4ccb-88b5-02faf2223927

architect___OP•

I think Launch Site Land Grab is the worst Map/Mode combo. Half the time all three hills are decided based on spawn because there's simply no way to get to the other hills fast enough.

1

Holy hell Launch Site Land Grab sounds awful

1
elconquistador1985•

Salvation KOTH is decided by who starts high, and they have an easy path to winning 3-0. Launch Site Land Grab isn't decided at the outset.

1
architect___OP•

Yeah, Launch Site Land Grab is even worse because it's completely random. I'd rather know I'm screwed the second the game starts so I can quit immediately.

1
architect___OP•

Eh, I don't love Chasm, but at least it looks good, it's readable, there are some jumps that take more skill than others, there is a small, balanced sandbox, no drop wall, no major rat spots, and there are plenty of areas you can play where you aren't vulnerable to being repulsed off the edge. Oh and no weird gimmicks like the Skewer-Mancannon or the tiny glowing tree branches you can stand on.

1
ssevered_•

Fair point. I think they should certainly take a look at the playlist map rotation. How do you feel about Bazaar? IMO shouldn’t be in there either. Hell I think Starboard would do quite well as a doubles map, far better than Immolate, Chasm, and Bazaar combined

1
architect___OP•

I haven't played Bazaar doubles yet, but I can't imagine it would play well. I'd remove it and Catalyst. Starboard might be fine, and bonus points because people already know it at this point... but I don't think it's anything special, and I imagine it could be very campy with one team controlling P2/3 and just holding it down the entire game.

Again I think the Japanese garden one is good, and Arrival is okay. I haven't played it enough to be sure, but Annamite by Uneeq seems good. I'd also be up for adding Uneeq's 1:1 Lockout remake since it's about the right size and has lots of verticality like Immolate.

1
ZatcharyB•

Chasm is easily the worst map. Absolute dog water.

1
theamazingc4:native_gaming: Native Gaming•

I honestly didn't like this map at first but now I prefer it over Bazaar, Chasm, and even Catalyst. I can't like 2v2 Catalyst because of the cheesy ass sword play.

1
architect___OP•

I agree Catalyst sucks balls for Doubles. I haven't played Doubles on Bazaar, but I imagine it's also not great. Chasm is okay.

1
theamazingc4:native_gaming: Native Gaming•

Bazaar just plays a bit campy. You have to control the power weapons alot more especially with the rockets being on the map. Bazaar is much better for 4v4s imo. I really would like to see some of the CHL maps in 2v2s tbh. Something like Lockout, Warlock, or Narrows would be a better addition imo but that's just me.

1
ThePrinceofBirds•

I've only gotten to play it once but I liked how it felt somewhat like a 2v2 construct.

I would definitely prefer it over that official map with the hexagons and long hallways that they admitted wasn't competitive for ranked arena but is now somehow in ranked doubles.

1
wiseguy187•

Meanwhile I think its the best 2v2 map in the Playlist. I Learned it in 2 games. It's small.and the only Map in the entire Playlist that isn't to big for 2v2. All the other shit maps this one bothers you? It allows you to move and engage in fights. I loved it after my 2nd or 3rd time.

1
architect___OP•

Is there any reason you like it other than it being small? Because there are many better maps for 2v2 out there. All three from the original community playlist are better. I don't understand why they'd add this one.

1
wiseguy187•

I do like the vertical and the ability to almost move up and maneuver around opponents in any part of the map. Truthfully I been playing halo since CE. Alot of rat race 2v2s. It just plays better. I feel like it's small enough to force engagement allow and allow for great team plays and smart flanks. Meaning a timely outplay. I don't know why this map feels better but I know I hated it my first game fell in love by the 2nd. All the other maps just feel so not halo for 2v2. Maybe the range just works for my br. Or I win alot of 1v1s on it. It just moved faster and forced 2v2 engagement.

1
architect___OP•

Gotcha, thanks for the detailed input. I agree it feels more like a CE map, that's also one of the first things I said while playing it. I just don't think of that as a good thing, but at least I see where you're coming from.

Like I've said to others, I'll probably grow to like some aspects of it the more I play it.

1
Javellinh_osu:quadrant: Quadrant•

I think 343 needs to delete every weapon other than BR and DMR. Also delete all maps and make all playlists playable only on HCS Ocragon 2042 map

1
architect___OP•

I get the joke, and I'm sure I agree with you in most cases. This is the first time I've ever made a post about anything in the entire game being non-competitive though, so I'm not one of those whiners.

Have you tried this map? What are your thoughts on it?

1
snoopyt7•

i'm not a huge fan of this map but i do like the verticality, i think there's too much space 'underground' and the janky stairs and overall look certainly don't help. i think it's kinda fine i guess.

i really liked some of the maps in the community doubles playlist, i wish they added some of those to ranked instead of immolate.

1
RookieMistake2448•

Yeah randomly got this map and was legit wondering wtf kinda mickey mouse BS that map was. They need to do a remake of midship, a Halo 5 Coliseum remake, and why there still isn't a sanctuary or ivory tower remake in rotation I have no clue.

There was also another map in Halo 5 that was moreso specifically for 2v2 but I can't recall the name but it would work perfect in infinite. Will update if I find it or remember the name.

1
ZatcharyB•

As an old school Halo player (H2 and H3 mainly) I can honestly say that Immolate is easily one of my favorite doubles maps. Feels like the good ol' days. Gives me Guardian vibes (which was also janky af back in the day)

1
architect___OP•

It gives me CE vibes more than anything, like Boarding Action or Chiron TL-34. Someone else in this thread said the same, although they think of it as a good thing and I think of it as bad. I think it gives classic game vibes because it feels less like a map that had a lot of top-down thought put into it and more like throwing random ideas at the wall to see what sticks. More gimmicks and less flow/fairness.

I'm also "old school" in that I first played CE, and H2 was the first one I played a ton. Didn't play much H3 and then stopped playing until like 3 years ago when I played through all but 5 in the lead-up to infinite.

1
PreLimQs•

I like the map. My only complaint are the visuals as they don't fit Halo, but instead look like something out of crash bandicoot. Gameplay wise it's solid though

1
architect___OP•

Wow I didn't realize the Crash Bandicoot aesthetic, but you're absolutely right.
