does shaving reduce the amount you sweat, or is my chef embarrassed about the fact he shaves his whole body.

and if it works wouldn't it make you really itchy and give you in grown hairs. he says he uses and electric shaver all over his body. so yeah does it work?

Don't shave your asscrack either, the farts won't have anything to pop on, so you'll have fart bubbles flying up and down your back.

Not to mention the pricklies every couple days (shit you not, one of my first thoughts when dumping my last girlfriend, "I don't have to shave my balls anymore!").... No one likes to see a cook scratching their ass...

Even worse when someone asks a hardened brooding cook why their ass is so itchy, "Yeah, it's been a couple days since I shaved my butthole"

I shave down or trim down the hair in my armpits and my crotch and it does kill the smell.

Word. Also doesn't tickle the girl's nose.

Might be a good question to post in r/askscience. Here you just get a bunch of alcohol and weed-fueled answers/speculation- mine included.

yeah but people here will have actually done it

Also I'd post that in r/shittyaskscience, the guys over at r/science are pretty strict about the subject material of their posts.

I think they'd definitely allow it. It's a great question that is not easily google-able

Sweat is the body's reaction to heat, so if you are extremely hairy maybe shaving makes sense(animals have fur to keep themselves warm). But I don't think the difference would be that dramatic. What I know from my personal experience is that if you shave you will smell less when you sweat. I started shaving my armpits and, allthough I didn't notice any big difference in the amount of sweat, I know that I didn't stink after my 10 hour shift. Hair helps the growth of bacteria which make you smell after a while. If you don't have any hair the sweat just drips away rather than staying in one place, giving the perfect conditions (moisture+heat) for "alien life" on your body.

TLDR: Shaving will probably make you sweat a tiny bit less(especially if you are very hairy), but for sure it will reduce the bad body odor when you sweat.

yeah thanks, im not too hairy, so except on my legs which sweat like balls, and my balls, so i might start doing my legs balls and pits

only thing with shaven legs in a hot environment is the sweat has no place to run onto so it goes straight down, instead of onto the hair then onto clothes. Shaven pits are good, then use a good underarm spray to keep it dry and cool.

aRabbitInTimeOP•

ah thanks for that didn't consider it

used to shave my legs for cycling etc, in the kitchen i would always end up with wet legs, but everyone is different.

Any time I'm did more than 8+ hours on the line I made sure my pits were well trimmed. It hasn't reduced the amount I sweat but it most definitely reduces the smell. Hair is a great platform for bacteria to grow/gather, so trimming is a great mechanism for avoiding that.

As for ingrown hairs you can avoid that by trimming down the hairs without doing a complete shave off. I'm willing to bet that if he uses an electric shaver his getting the haris down to the point where they are just above the surface. I only use a beard trimmer for my facial hair and I haven't an ingrown hair in years.

But yeah, trimmed pits, sleeveless underarmour underneath my chef's coat, goldbond or cornstarch for my thighs, and lotion for the back of my neck and lower back and I could bust out 16 hours on the line without smelling like I spent the last month in a WWI trench and I was comfortable to boot.

Be careful with the corn starch. It's a food product and can feed bacteria. You do not want a yeast infection inside your thighs. It can happen all too easily. Stick to the Gold Bond.

Cornstarch does not cause a yeast infection. This is a misconception.

It will however exacerbate a yeast infection if you apply it to an infected area. Besides, if it caused a yeast infection, would it be the majority ingredient in baby powders sold in store? Why would they even make baby powder with pure cornstarch?

Johnson's Pure cornstarch powder

Johnson's regular baby powder See the product details list below

Walgreen's

Cornstarch has kept millions of kitchen workers without rashes for decades, along with tens of millions of babies who have used the product. It's perfectly safe for use by humans as a topical agent.

How the fuck do you wear underarmor on the line without suffocating? During service, I pray for a reason to run to the walk-in, which is just a 15 foot walk outside in 20F degree weather.

After service, during breakdown, I've been known to take a minute or two to rub snow on my neck.

Actually I wear an undershirt all the time. The shirt acts as an insulation barrier by grabbing the sweat and then the evaporation cools you off.

1
IAmYourTopGuy•

It won't reduce the amount that you sweat, but it will increase the rate of evaporation so it might seem like you're sweating less. As long as you don't cut the hair super short, you shouldn't have to worry about in-grown hair.

2
Chefbexter•

It doesn't reduce how much you sweat, but it reduces odor from sweat and bacteria building up on hair. Sweat also evaporates faster and skin stays cooler and drier without insulating/damp hair. (Source: I'm a girl and I shave everything.)

If you don't want to worry about razor burn, some guys I know use trimmers and just trim their body hair very short.

1
Dollaz•

I don't really have a lot of body hair but I do trim around the tree for the lady. I have found that some scented baby powder keeps you from sweating so much down there. It also keeps your cock and balls from smelling quite so bad.

ratsoncatsonrats•

from a female perspective, i shave my armpits, legs, etc.. It causes my armpits to feel a lot wetter and smell strange when I shave them. I have had them natural before and it seems to wick the moisture away from your skin.... Same thing applies to between your legs and I would guess the ass area as well.

Stopping alcohol consumption will reduce your sweating. Increasing your cannabis consumption will reduce your sweating. If your chef really wants to go hairless, tell him to use 'carbon tetrachloride' to remove the hairs permanently. This can be found at the dry cleaners.
