Bug/PSA - Do not use stolen ships, Cargo will reset
Just a heads up. I stole a pirate ship, registered it, and then upgraded it to class C. I used it for a good while without having an issue.
I then did some in game waiting to sell some things and after a few days of that my cargo reset, my ship renamed and unregistered itself, and I lost everything without realizing for several hours of gameplay after.
Ownership is not being set correctly by the game. I just reloaded an old save, renamed the ship, swapped back and forth, and then waited 5 or 6 in game days. The cargo deleted itself again.
Stolen ships are not usable/safe and will delete your cargo.

That's a weird bug.
I've only used stolen ships in my ~50 hours of gameplay and have not lost my cargo.
Try to test it out? Could just be random or only with some ships.
Leave the ship, go into a city, find a chair and sit for 5 or 6 days. See if your cargo poofs.
I boarded and took a Spacer Vulture 3. Had a huge reactor so I turned it into my battleship. Few in game days go by. It's now called UC Cargo A and has 0 cargo. I did modify the cargo modules so maybe that is why??
Selling it and buying it back fixed the ownership/flags on the cargo for me to make it not reset ever few in game days. I quit playing though, I kept running into too many extremely frustrating bugs like this. I'll just play it in a year when the community can more effectively finish the game.
Has nothing to do with modifying cargo in ship buolder. I'm finding that it only occurs after I make a manual save.
For added detail, the ship I had was initially a "Crimson Fleet Reaper"
I'll have a go when I get the chance.
I've been using a big, ugly ship that I stole from the Ecliptics very early on in the game as my main ship. Don't recall what it was called originally.
It's kept its 'Amalgam' name for like ~40 hours of gameplay.
I did have a ship that I was not using change its name randomly though.
That one was a bit of a weird one.
I captured a Crimson Fleet Wight and kept it in my collection for a while (did not fly it or change anything about it).
At some point, it changed names to 'UC Hauler' or something to that effect.
Pretty much exactly what happened to me... Even the same name. Right before it happened the ship was acting weird. I docked at a station and when i tried to get back to it it was just gone. I was stuck floating in space. I reloaded and changed my home ship. When i changed back to it the name was changed and cargo was gone.
I think you're right about ownership. The ship seems to go back to it's initial faction and leaves without you. What you get is probably a copy.
