What is it like to live in Ventura county? 30F single

I am thinking of moving for work from Long Beach and I can choose any location in CA. Sunnyvale because Ill be working with my supervisor or I can work in Camarillo.

I vacationed in Camarillo a few months ago and I liked it. Its quite and pretty. I didnt go over to Ventura.

Right now I want to focus on dating. Im 30F in tech (used to be in Navy but not at Oxnard) but I love the stereotypical laidback lifestyle. I like driving and am willing to go to LA.

Any thoughts are welcomed, thanks!

If you don't mind oxnard, the weather is beautiful. It's way cooler than Camarillo and it puts you closer to Ventura where I'm told there are some nice bars. Either way, Ventura in general has less traffic, crime, and better weather than LA. You can't go wrong with just about any city in Ventura.

noforgayjesus•

Downtown Ventura is amazing, but Oxnard is not bad either. I definitely love, The Shores, Hollywood Beach Cafe, Waterside and Mocqueca. I live in Port Hueneme and am a huge fan of it there also.

1
hippos_on_parade•

Yeah, what's wrong with Oxnard? Beaches are beautiful, way less crowded.. the harbor is nicer and cleaner and plenty of good food and shit to do.

1
Kfm101•

#1 issue with Oxnard is everything being so damn far apart and all the traffic + stop lights. Not walkable or bikable at all. Also depending on where you live you may be stuck with all chain restaurants/bars and strip malls.

It has a lot of potential to improve though and as you mentioned, the harbor and beaches are amazing. Especially at the price compared to pretty much any other beach city from Tijuana and to SF

1
IceNein•

all the traffic + stop lights.

I swear to god the city council must've hired a specialist just to make sure that the timings on the lights, and the priorities for the sensors for side streets was exactly the opposite of what you should do for efficient traffic flow.

1
arocks1•

its an old town with old infastrucutre..they would have to update the whole city except anything buitlt recently

1
MerrilS•

Yup.

1

Oxnard City Counsel is known to be pretty corrupt- they approve a lot of building with little to no parking, waive code requirements etc- obviously getting kickbacks.

1
TheFreshWenis•

Agreed with all of that. Oxnard has okay public transit coverage, but with how huge and spread-out the city is there's definitely long stretches of walking involved depending on where you'd like to go without driving. I am not kidding about this, my old doctor's office was literally about 2 miles from the nearest bus stop.

Which would be fine to some people...except some chunks of Oxnard don't even have sidewalk. That's right, between the Esplanade and the bridge to get to the Collection there's no sidewalk for like half a mile of it altogether.

1
radylainicorn•

+1 for Oxnard!!

1
TheFreshWenis•

Downtown Ventura is wonderful because you have access to both neat bars, museums, restaurants, stores, etc., and the pier/beach is just a freeway bridge away. Definitely one of my favorite places in the world!

Oxnard's mostly worth considering if OP doesn't mind driving a lot, as Oxnard doesn't have the best public transit/sidewalk coverage.

1
friendly-sam•

Ventura is laid back. It's also kind of got the small town feel to it. I often see people I know out and about, and it's pretty friendly. Ventura is central to a lot of interesting places, Ojai, Santa Barbara, Camarillo, Oxnard, and LA. Being close to Oxnard, Ojai, and Camarillo is great for your eating out options.

1
TheFreshWenis•

Ventura's probably the only place in all of Ventura County that really feels laid back.

Historical-Love-65•

I live in Simi Valley, in one side I have the valley and in the other side camarillo, oxnard, ventura. I have the best of both worlds.

1
plusgoodduckspeakThe Nard•

That’s a great point; having said that, Simi is filled with white supremacists and LAPD. Plus it’s hot AF.

1
Historical-Love-65•

You are right about the supremacists and LAPD, I am latina and have experienced the racisism. About the weather I don’t complain.

1
parselywuOP•

I'm LOLing because I'm from Missouri. Take what you want with that.

The weather though...yikes!

1
Ben_Turra51•

Oh Ventura is such a change for you then. Love the weather, hate the atmosphere.

1
georgee779•

I have never lived in Simi, but I work in the SFV with A LOT of really cool people who are far from being Trumpsters and cops. Just had to say that! = ) There is hope!

1
plusgoodduckspeakThe Nard•

Yeah, my ex was from Simi, I didn't hold it against her though. I know there are some good people there. BUT...

1
georgee779•

LOL Yep!!! I hear you.

1
caleyjag•

True, but it does seem the 'don't tread on me' folks are louder and prouder in Simi than anywhere else in Ventura County.

1
georgee779•

Wowwww. What a sad thing to hear!! It’s just gross. Sigh..

1
parselywuOP•

So are we talking OC levels? Because if its like OC, then meh. I don't wanna see it, but it's whatever. I'm basically from the south so I'm numb to it.

1
jroseamoroso•

Moorpark has entered the chat

1

Simi Valley is way too hot. I wouldn’t be able to take that year round

1
TheFreshWenis•

Sending hugs from Camarillo if you want them!

1

I moved from LB to Ventura about 6 years ago for work. The change in the dating scene is dramatically noticeable. I'm sure there are actual demographics out there but from my perspective it feels like the median age is in the high 50's. It also doesn't help that most businesses shut down before 10pm, even in the downtown area.

All that being said the laidback lifestyle here is really nice. The weather is incredible year around and there are a lot of things to do if you want. Best of luck in your adventure.

1
TheFreshWenis•

Camarillo tends to shut down even earlier than Ventura does, lol.

Also, yeah, lots of older people here as the VC economy kinda sucks if you don't already have a good income, and because it's "pleasantly boring" and conservative in most of Ventura County, most of the younger adults who don't have kids go elsewhere.

But yeah, if OP wants the stereotypical "laidback lifestyle" she should definitely check out Ventura.

1

Very mellow

1

I think it's pretty relaxed. Not as many great food options as you might be used to but there's still enough. Less people so a bit smaller of a dating pool and if you do need to switch jobs there's less options. The weather is great. Housing costs are higher then you would expect for the workforce.

1
plusgoodduckspeakThe Nard•

Sunnyvale is no where near Ventura county.

You vacationed in Camarillo? Why? It’s a bedroom community filled with churches and middle-class Karen’s.

Ventura is much more popular for someone in your age group.

1
TheFreshWenis•

I'm in Camarillo and am also curious to know why she vacationed in Camarillo.

Though I did chuckle at your comment that Camarillo is "a bedroom community filled with churches and middle-class Karens", because at least the churches part is completely true, Camarillo does have a lot of churches!

1
plusgoodduckspeakThe Nard•

Yep, I owned a home there and lived in Cam for a few years. There's a ton of churches, boomers, and people that like to think they're wealthy but living above their means.

1
TheFreshWenis•

Yup. Sounds like Camarillo alright.

1
parselywuOP•

Camarillo had the cheapest decent hotel and its near Ventura and SB.

1
TheFreshWenis•

Ah, okay. And you're very right, Camarillo is relatively close to Ventura and SB.

I don't even drive, but it's only an hour on the bus for me to get from Camarillo to Ventura. Haven't worked out going to/from SB by bus yet.

1
parselywuOP•

Im aware Sunnyvale is in the bay area.

1
plusgoodduckspeakThe Nard•

Good to know

ghostengineering43•

Ventura county in general is laid back overall. We have a naval base nearby so if you like that environment, a lot of military people by that area. Ventura is more popular/younger crowd. Lots of bars and restaurants. (Main Street) Camarillo is nice if you’re looking for a little more quiet. Not as much to do. All close to the beach and everyone is friendly. My SO and I are in our late 20s-30s so if you’re looking for more specific recommendations I may be able to point you in a general direction. Regardless good luck!

1
onyursix•

^^ what they said is 100% true

1
CroneDaze•

My daughter is your age and lives in Vta. She loves it, but many of her friends are there as well. Several were recent transplants from other parts of Ca. It's coastal weather so be prepared for that. The music scene has really upped its game in the past decade and there is plenty to offer. It's not a 24 hr town. So, if you're looking for bustling nightlife, it isn't here.

1
MermaidHippie_rn•

I have to disagree with you on the nightlife. It depends what you’re looking for but I’ve been here my whole life and manage to find great places to hang out, party, etc. if I wanted to Rave all night, I would go into LA but that’s really not my scene, I think it’s a great place to call home base and work your way out from there depending on what you want to do

1
DonDadaCheese•

Ventura is filled with people in their 60s who don’t want to change anything and keep the same old factories and old rotting houses, while the rest of the world moves on (and their kids move out).

Everything else changes. In ten years it will make Oxnard seem like Manhattan while Ventura is stuck in Jersey.

1
ComputerEngineer94•

It depends on what your interest are, there is a huge variety of things for everyone, surfing, board games, dancing, hiking, art, there’s a ton of stuff. If you want a more chill laid back lifestyle, Camarillo is def the place to go. A huge chunk of the dating scene is online, but a lot of shops and organizations host events throughout the month, I can recommend a few things, but also instagram has a lot of pages for these kinds of meetups.

1
Jolly-Pickle-3550•

I moved from Long Beach and I miss the diversity in people and food. The beach is nicer and it’s less people but I actually would move back to LB. The crowd is older out here.

1
parselywuOP•

You think LB has a nice beach???

1
Jolly-Pickle-3550•

No Ventura does. The beach is nicer and there’s less people

1
parselywuOP•

OOOH ok gotcha

1
_ohne_dich_•

Don’t move here unless you want to remain single. I’m a transplant and moved here because my job is based on Ventura County and it’s not a remote position, so I wasn’t willing to deal with long commutes and traffic. Most comments have covered the issues, I’ll add Ventura itself it’s a nice beach town but it’s crawling with boomers who refuse to change and with the worst NIMBY mindset I’ve ever seen. Camarillo is too suburban, same as Thousand Oaks, Moorpark, Simi Valley and Westlake Village. Oxnard (to me) is not a good option either due to the demographic and crime issues in some areas. Long Beach is much nicer and has a lot more culture and things to do.

1
arocks1•

what do you mean by demographics? your kinda prejudice are yoou not..

1
_ohne_dich_•

Statistics show that nearly half of all adults have less than a high school education. These are facts, not prejudice.

1
arocks1•

and whats your point...LOTS of good people live there....

1
_ohne_dich_•

Sigh. Where did I say bad people live there? I was referring to demographics, first you accuse me of being prejudiced and after I expanded on my comment now you’re assuming things. Some people prefer to be surrounded by others with a similar background and people you can have things in common with, some do not care about those things. Nobody is wrong, it’s a matter of preference. I shared my thoughts about it. That’s it.

1
TheFreshWenis•

I'm pretty sure that Oxnard is relatively uneducated due to systemic racism and classism issues, not because they're worse people.

1
onyursix•

Mostly inaccurate ^^ I’m born and raised in VC -and an LA commuter -I’ve seen a lot and can compare many things

1
_ohne_dich_•

Exactly, you’re born and raised here. That makes a huge difference compared to someone who is a transplant. I’ve also seen a lot, lived abroad and in several different states. I shared what my observations were, being a native to the area is not the same as moving here as an adult.

1

I agree with you! I’m almost certain being born and raised here would give someone a different outlook. I moved here from Los Angeles and noticed a HUGE difference in demographics in Oxnard. It’s just facts. It’s not as diverse. In LA you can find many different diversities in different areas. For example, SGV has an Asian population of about 60%. East Los Angeles are around 80% Latinos. Burbank/Glendale 60% Armenian. Etc.

1
_ohne_dich_•

Yeah, I don’t know why some people take it as a personal attack.

1
speaktosumboedy•

You been to LB before? Trying to say demographics as a reason to not move to Oxnard when from coming from LB. Good grief.

1
parselywuOP•

Yeah I hate Long Beach. Idk why people love it here. Am I missing something? Downtown is dilapidated, empty and boring and the beach sucks.

1
Redhawkgirl•

I work all over the place, including Long Beach, and I live in Thousand Oaks, but grew up in Somis, which is super close to Camarillo. I’m older than you, but I think the main difference is that the communities out here are older and more family-based if it was 20 years ago, I would say it would be much harder because there are less cool spots to hang out bars, etc. but because everything is online now it probably doesn’t matter, and eventually when you buy a house, it is so much cheaper to live here. I lived in LA in my 20s after school and then moved back out here in my 30s to buy a house in my 20s. I loved going to all the up-and-coming chef restaurants etc. all the time but I also got so many parking tickets and in general hated the traffic and crowds everywhere and it’s only gotten worse. I love that I can park almost anywhere in Ventura county without a meter and we have better restaurants now or I just drive to LA and Santa Barbara for a special occasion. Camarillo and Ventura weather will be similar to Long Beach because they are coastal or close to Coastal versus Thousand Oaks is hotter because the mountains block the coastal air.

1
TheFreshWenis•

Camarillo's a few miles more inland from the ocean than Ventura, which both prevents a lot of the beach wind/fog/damp that can make Ventura chilly and also makes Camarillo significantly warmer than Ventura.

During the most recent heatwave here, it was like 85-92 F in Camarillo and only about 77-79 F in Ventura.

1
djbuu•

If you enjoy safe suburban lifestyle and are willing to travel for any kind of nightlife, it’s a great place to live. My wife and I have to plan more for any nights out tho!

1
Anneticipation_•

Lots of folks your age at Riverpark in Oxnard

1
TheFreshWenis•

That's what I was thinking, the main younger adults who want to live in Camarillo or TO are those who have kids and want to raise them in a place like that.

I admittedly don't have much firsthand experience of Oxnard at all, but the closer you get to DT Ventura the better it gets for younger adults.

1
caleyjag•

For social life, as a 30-something single I'd aim for living in or near downtown Ventura. Much of the rest of the county is suburbia.

I don't quite understand your location and commute requirements. If you can work in Camarillo, then living in downtown Ventura is totally fine, especially if you can avoid 5pm traffic between Camarillo and Oxnard.

1
parselywuOP•

Never said I had any requirements. I'll work in Camarillo. The drive to Ventura is fine.

1
speaktosumboedy•

I'm 32M and married but I'd look into North Oxnard/Riverpark area and the new developments just south of the freeway near Oxnard Blvd. It's starting to really thrive in my opinion and you'd have access to a lot of things within walking distance if that's your thing. Ventura is great also but is an older scene. Better bars and local breweries along main street but that's it. The beach is close anywhere you live unless you go to Simi Valley which I'd not recommend if you're single.

1

You’ll find more conservative guys here than in Sunnyvale. This is also one of the most expensive areas in the US to raise kids. On the apps you’ll find a lot of engineers of all levels it’s pretty saturated for that here. Generally I hear people like it here because the weather is nicer than up north but there are more younger people up north

1

I moved not too long ago from Pasadena. I would say if you’re single and trying to date, it’s much much harder over here in Ventura county. To be quite honest many people are married or are out of the age range. However, since there is a limited dating pool, the ones that are single in your range are more willing to be in a relationship since there aren’t 100 men after one woman like it is in LA. Amazing weather over here hands down. The beaches are extremely nice and not crowded like the beaches in LA/Orange county. The food choices are limited. I miss the foos choices and the late hours of LA. Overall, it’s good if you want to raise a family here, like a relaxed environment, and love nature.

1
parselywuOP•

Yea Id move to Pasadena but its pricey
