Why do I feel like I need to protect my dad

Question

He's an alcoholic abusive asshole. Yet I constantly get intrusive thoughts telling me that I need to protect him from the world as if he's a fragile baby. Why? Is this a symptom of parentification? I'm 28 years old and I feel like I've always had these thoughts.

me too. it probably comes from the knowledge that he is actually in a lot of pain and very vulnerable. for me, i think i had to understand this as a kid to be able to better predict when he was going to blow his top. by protecting my dad from negative feelings, i could then protect myself from his blow up. i think that is part of what parentification is. i think knowing you are safe now goes a long way to disabling those feelings.
