Why do you have to be 18 to by bang energy drinks

Management Questions

I have a regular who's not happy about showing ID.

He says it's not a law in my state. I personally didnt care why it changed but I do like to be able to explain things logically to the customer. The register and can say 18+ but the customer wants to know why and I honestly don't know the answer.

There's enough caffeine in them to make your heart stop, so naturally they don't want to be legally responsible if someone drinks six cans and drops dead.

They are full of nasty ingredients that fuck up developing brains. Businesses reserve the right to restrict the sale of any item for any reason (unless protected by law)

I know and agree with that. We have a right to demand all of our customers wear top hats if we want and energy drinks are proven to be bad for children. Stunted growth, learning disabilities. I'm not arguing with that

He is tho. I was looking for what changed recently especially if it's a legal thing but if it's just policy that's fine too. Something I can point to and say "this is why"

As far as I know nothing legal wise, it’s nationwide and ik for a fact there’s no federal laws for that. Dollar tree has not released any messages in opscenter or anything, just silently updated the registers, so all we can really do is speculate

Just blame it on “corporate.” New store policy.

The DTs by me have actually ID’ed even for Rip It for years now. Parents here got mad when they’d give their kid a buck to pick out a candy or something and they’d get an energy drink.

If he's over 18 and you know he's over 18, you don't have to ID. It's not alcohol or cigarettes.

🤦‍♂️ just bang? Not redbull not monster?

Bang has about twice as much caffeine per can vs Monster.

Caffeine is an addictive drug. Like nicotine or alcohol. It can also be unsafe in large doses. Kid's brains and bodies are still developing and growing until they hit 25 years old. So, I guess at some point society just decided that 18 would be a good age, since we let people smoke cigarettes and vapes at 18, and we let people go fight in wars at 18, we might as well let them drink caffeine at 18.

21 is the smoking age now

I’ve been slowly researching this for my boss because there has been not any form of a notice stated on when and why this is required. I’ve only found one article that gives decent information, but the info is about how much caffeine is in one can; and I didn’t see any information confirming people have to be 18 or older to purchase Bang.

All the other results were people asking the same thing as you, OP. I even saw one person asking why they needed to be 18 or older to buy Bang, as well as asking why they were only allowed to purchase one can at a time.

Back to the article… for the average person, it’s safe to consume 400mg of caffeine daily. To give some examples: eight ounces of brewed coffee has a little less than 100mg, and one can of Monster has about 160mg. With Bang though, one can has 300mg. That’s a lot of caffeine for one drink you’ll likely drink in one setting.

This is likely why it’s required to verify age to purchase Bang.

I plan on researching more about this. I want to find a legitimate source that clarifies either there being a law for this, or something that states it’s up to the company to decide.

I should also state that I’m unsure how credible the article source is. But the information doesn’t seem out of the realm of logic.

Too much of these stimulants and chemicals can cause dependence, dehydration, insomnia, heart palpitations and/or an increased heart rate in both children and adults. But in children, these symptoms are often even more extreme.

Aren't they legally still considered a ovc drug

It says "NOT FOR SALE TO MINORS" right on the can. It's store policy, not necessarily a state law.

They lost a lawsuit a wile back that deemed the high level of caffeine is damaging to developing brains so now its is age restricted to 18 and older.

The +18 image is on the can. Was on there since before the update

Because energy drinks can cause heart problems. I have a 30 yr old customer with a pacemaker because of energy drinks & my husband died of a heart attack that was induced by Monster energy drinks.
