Have not played since release, any tips for single player pve?

Help

I plan to get back into the game and waste some time in singleplayer pve, i looked at the maps and the cooles one seems to be crystal islands.
I have none of the dlcs.
Crystal island is a free expac right? do i have to install it after i install the game or does it come with the base install?
What mods should i look for for a better experience?
I heard local singleplayer is buggy and people recommend hosting a server locally and playing singleplayer on that, how do i go about that? Can i install mods on it?

I wpuld just play normal singleplayer and not bother hosting, as for dlc you just select that in steam before or after install.

Awesome spyglass is probably the most popular singleplayer mod but I also use dino tracker to find my lost tames, sleepable bed and some other quality of life ones

Just browsing the sub i read that your dinos can dissapear in singleplayer and whitout a server you cant backup to get them back, is that still a problem?

I think its possibly still a problem but I can't be 100% sure, to be safe you could just backup your save before you transfer by copying the save data somewhere else

You could try Ark Server Manager, its free and you host on your system with steam. It takes a bit of set up but they have a discord and there's a few guides out there that can help. You can install mods easily and edit various mod settings via gameusersettings.ini and manage server rules within the server manager UI. I haven't honestly tried doing it a different way so I'm very biased, this is my first time running a server and it's relatively painless. I play solo, sometimes my partner hops on and mucks around for a while, it works great.

Mods I'd recommend:

  • Kraken's Better Dinos
  • Immersive Taming
  • Dino Storage V2
  • Structures Plus (S+)
  • Castles Keeps and Forts Remastered (has a sci-fi architecture version as well)

If you want to have brightly colored dinos without having to start events I'd also recommend Shiny! Dinos and Just Dino Colors.
