What's that smell?

General Cleaning

Hi, I had a roommate this summer in two rooms of my apartment. I always thought he had a terrible body odour, but he was a very young guy, this was the first time he was away from his parents, and he was very self-conscious so I never brought it up. He obviously knew it was a problem because he talked about deodorant a few times and washed his clothes very often. But when I once took his laundry from the line because it started to rain, his clothes still smelled like that. They were totally impregnated with his smell.

But after he moved out I found out that both 'his' rooms were very strongly smelling like him. Just being in those rooms made me nauseous because of the stink. I'm a super taster, I'm allergic to strong odours, can't stand flowers or fabric softener. My nose starts running and I get terrible headaches, so this is a big problem.

I cleaned everything, washed the curtains and all the textiles and let it air out with a fan and kept the windows open for a few weeks. Still didn't go away. Another cleaning session, with vinegar because that's the only cleaning product I can tolerate. I didn't use those rooms all summer, kept the doors closed. I hoped it would go away but it didn't. The smell is less but is still there.

Then recently I had a contractor visiting to make a quote and when he passed me he smelled exactly the same. and he was in a suit and not sweaty at all. Then I figured out the smell wasn't BO but a deodorant! My roomie had been dousing himself with this deodorant, probably from a spray can and it was literally everywhere. The Axe effect IRL. (I don't know the brand unfortunately.)

Now it's getting colder I have to use those rooms because they're the only rooms that I can heat separately.

So I moved my stuff back in. But after sitting in there for an hour I had to leave. It was just too much. And even while I write this, many hours later in another room, the smell is still with me, in my clothes in my nose. It's driving me crazy.

How can I clean these rooms? How do you clean something that is especially engineered to smell as long as possible, is probably oil based and has attached itself to everything? Is it in the ceiling, in the paint of the walls, the cracks between the floor? I don't know. But even after two months of airing out and several cleaning sessions it still hasn't evaporated.

Halp!
