Is it just me, or does the concept of an evil goddess of physical deformity feel somewhat outdated?

World of Golarion

I am, of course, talking about Lamashtu, the mother of monsters. I mean, I get where this was coming from when the first edition was originally created, but with the way the world has changed since then, I just don't buy into the idea any more. Just look at her Edicts:

bring power to outcasts and the downtrodden

This is straight up a good thing. Like, there is nothing evil here. You're helping the suffering.

indoctrinate children in Lamashtu’s teachings

Okay, this is self-serving, and kind of fucked up, but children of people worshipping good deities also get raised in that faith, so this is a fairly basic thing framed in an evil way.

make the beautiful monstrous

That sound really evil, but... I just don't buy the idea that there is some universal standard by which beauty and monsters can be judged. Like, for a worshipper for Lamashtu, this one should be utterly nonsensical - the monstrous should be beautiful to them, and why not? Why shouldn't you be able to love a mutated half-breed monster in all their tentacle-covered glory?

reveal the corruption and flaws in all things

I mean, yes, this a good thing. Things aren't always perfect, and a lot of the broken things can't be fixed, merely accommodated. Making the world face the fact that it's not pure and deal with this revelation should the lauded.

Now let's look at her Anathmas:

attempt to treat a mental illness or deformity

Again, this sounds bad, but also... I don't know, somewhat strange considering that one of the ways in which Lamashtu shows her favor is regrowing your lost limbs. They regrow differently than before as a sign of her intervention, yes, but she's still clearly not out to have people be non-functional - just "corrupted".

Anyways, I feel like this too could be a good thing. A lot of mental illnesses and deformitys can't be healed. Accepting that those things are a part of us, and creating a world where people can function despite them, would be progress. A lot of horrible things were done in the name of "treating" things that never could, or even needed to, be treated.

provide succor to Lamashtu’s enemies

This a basically a non-rule. No god likes it if you help their enemies, not even good ones.

Also, can we talk about mothers-to-be praying to Lamashtu for a successful birth, which is a prayer she actually grants, but at the cost of "corrupting" the baby? Like, what is the lesson here? That a child born dead is better than a child born deformed? I'm still not buying it.

Now, I know that my alternate characterization of what Lamashtu is not how she's actually written. Lamashtu doesn't actually give a shit about any of her "children", she's a might-makes-right asshole that has read too much of the writings of Thomas Hobbes and needs to get her breeding kink under control. But I don't think that she needs to be this way. None of that follows from the idea of a godess of the mentally and physically altered. She could exist without this horrible equating of disability and evil.

Like, here is how I would write her: Lamashtu, the mother of monsters, godess of aberrance, monsters, and nightmares, CN. She genuinely loves all her monsters and his horrified about people getting cast out for their inborn flaws. She still does her "power at a price" thing where she provides healing at the cost of deformity. She still looks like somebody fucked a jackal and a hawk at the same time. She likes nature, beasts and the freedom from the chains of society. Her flaw is that she loves monsters so much, she can see no wrong in what they do, even if they fight among each other or murder people. A monster might pray to her just as a civilized person discriminated against for their disability.

Or just fucking kill her. She had a good run, the world has just passed her by.
