Confusing experience tantra and psychedelics

Hello,

I am completely new to tantra. I just read a book once but never practiced. This weekend I was at a birthday party with a mix of folks who are into kink, raves, tantra, and psychedelics. At midnight there was a performance/special event where the participants were lead into a group tantric ritual/experience while blindfolded. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I never did anything like it. I also received no warning about what could happen while on psychedelics. I was on 100mcg of lsd. We were all blindfolded and at some point we were encouraged to lose our boundaries of our sense of self and let ourselves be carried. I don’t recall the details of what she said. But by the time it was over the transition back was very fast and i was completely disoriented. I was confused, felt like I was spinning, and I couldn’t think clearly. I couldn’t figure out what to do with myself. I became kind of manic and kind of regressed. I behaved oddly. It was very disturbing for me. Now I am reading about it and I see doing these things together could be a really bad idea. I wish there was a warning made about substances because I know many people were taking something and it could have been quite risky. I am writing to ask how I can find out more information about the dangers of tantric practice and drugs. Is there anything anyone can share about this? I thought I lost my mind. Luckily I was able to recover without major consequence but now I’m trying to understand what happened to me.

Thank you 🙏🏻

That had probably nothing to do with Tantra at all.

sanatanagosvami•

it definitely had nothing to do with tantra.

This is orgy sex disguised in Tantra. New agers are camouflaging their kinks by manipulating people into believing they are having tantric sex for the sake of sexual liberation or spiritual growth. This is not Tantra.

I see what you’re saying. But in general I’m curious what are general recommendations about psychedelics/drugs and Tantra or Tantra-adjacent practices?

DarkenRaahl•

Maithuna is supposed to be a type of sadhana for spiritual attainments, although alcohol could be used during the rite, I assume psychedelics will alter your consciousness so much that you won't be able to conduct the sadhana. Talking from experience.

sanatanagosvami•

I recommend you find a guru who can guide you in tantra and he will probably tell you not to take psychedelics or drink alcohol.

Neither psychedelics nor tantra should be taken lightly. Both lead to altered states of consciousness, and going into it without knowing what to expect can lead to shock and confusion. I'd also avoid the group that brought you into this.

That being said, work on "Grounding" yourself. Take walks in nature barefoot. Do your favorite comfortable activities. Consider a proper, supportive group that focuses on breathwork and meditation first.

Thank you for your input. Yes I was certainly in shock and quite confused.

Ok so you were in a mixed environment.

I have a lot to say about this but before I could even begin I'd need to know a lot more. You don't really make it clear what exactly happened (was it just being blindfolded, was everyone blindfolded, was it men and women, was it clothed, partially nude or nude).

Was this your first time on LSD? If not how familiar with LSD are you and where on your journey were you when this started?

You say that you were manic, then regressed (do you mean you regressed from the mania?), you say you behaved oddly (from normal life, from LSD norm or so odd that it was odd sober or not?)

Are you someone who recognizes your sovereignty (you are an adult and you make and choose your own decisions)?

I could fathom some guesses as well as support you on learning more but I would need to know a lot more info. Could you tell us more or maybe message if you have more info you are looking for?

Happy to answer your questions. It was not my first time on LSD. I’ve had ten years of experience with it and many other psychedelics, probably have taken it 30+ times or so. When the experience started I was about 1-2 hours in to LSD journey (about 100mcg or so), during possibly its peak and more intense period.

I 100% believe that I am an adult and I make my own decisions but I don’t believe that made an informed decision and had I known what I was about to get myself into and the potential for such a complex experience while simultaneously on the LSD, I would not have participated. Given that most people at the party were likely consuming some form of drug actually I think it would have been wise to address that before facilitating a group experience like that.

In terms of what exactly happened. There were about 50+ people in the room. It was dark. People were all on the floor. Men and women. Clothed. Blindfolded. She encouraged sensual exploration but was also using a lot of spiritual and self-actualizing language, through the exploration of desire and sexuality. She then encouraged a sort of trancendental experience, a dissolution of boundaries of self, and so on. During the experience people were touching me, at some point a man seemed to have been on top of me, making out with me and pressing himself against me. Nothing bad happened persay but internally my mind felt like it dissolved and I was very confused and disoriented when it was over.

The transition out was quick and I couldn’t really gather myself. I was exhausted. I couldn’t make decisions about what to do. I was overwhelmed. I went to the bathroom and had difficulty thinking clearly in a way very unusual for me even on LSD. I became quite anxious. I went to the bathroom and couldn’t figure out what to do even in there. I was behaving a bit erratically. I tried to rest in a quiet place but my mind was racing. At some point I was able to reorganize myself a bit but still I exhibited some strange behaviors. I was surprised to have had such a reaction and felt ashamed about it but then today I started thinking about the potentiating effect of the LSD and the experience and how if I would have been given a heads up, that I would likely have not done it and would have been fine.

It’s certainly the kind of thing I feel like woukd have been safer sober.

Thank you so much for telling me more of the story, that makes it so much clearer. The fact that you are experienced with LCD makes a big difference too.

That practice is similar to an exercise called Latihan. In Latihan, people are blindfolded and then invited to follow their intuition 100% while music is playing. Everyone is taught about boundaries and how no means no beforehand and because everyone is blindfolded everything moves slowly. I've not done it in any other way but sober. As someone who has done medicine work, and experienced acid, that had to be an intense experience as even sober it's impressive.

Without being there I would add that it sounds like this person also brought up the energy of a container, which forms a small christ body if you will (like a micro version of the experience of God on Acid we see as everyone being an incarnation of God in different timespace moment lineages if you understand). On Acid the connective consciousness, and psychic channels, would have been opened and possibly amplified. Writing doesn't really touch on it but I hope this helps you understand.

When you left, you were recentering within your own manifest body vs. a collective consciousness experiencing oneness together in an intimate way. I would spend a little time exploring tantra, yoga and meditation sober for a while as a way to ground this advanced experience.

I hope that helps, I could help more in a conversation on such a topic (multidimensional expressions through tantra, medicine, meditation and such are really limited by text only communication of such things as you probably know).

BTW how do I get an invite? I'd love to see this party, it sounds like some things I've gone to myself and always love meeting new people ;) (just by the description I am sure it's nowhere near the midwest where I live, lol).

Oh dear...
This sounds like extreme red flags to me...
To be honest, I am not super familiar to new age tantra.
(It's often very different than actual tantra)
And I'm sorry, I am generally very bad with writing out what I actually mean to say,
But your description makes me very worried, so I'll still give it a try:
Honey...
This situation sounds like a free ticket to sexual trauma. 😰
And as far as I understand from your description it has definitely been causing some serious amount of damage.
Please allow yourself all the healing that you need to recover from this, no need for any doubts on that, ever.
It's good that you're taking it seriously and actively investigate what these disturbing feelings are, because a lot of people would dismiss it because of doubting themselves.
Please follow your instincts!
It seems clear that your body and psyche got very disturbed by it, so no matter how much the other people might've been pretending that it would be normal, your experiences are legitimate and very clear, so please don't doubt yourself! <3
That being said I'll try to be a bit more specific:
"dissolution of boundaries of self" in a sexual setting with strangers sounds extremely unhealthy!!
Honestly this sounds like fucked up manipulation,
whether the guides were deliberately aware of this, might've been perpetuating their own sexual trauma, or were genuinely oblivious to basic human (sexual) psychology.
But for real. It's exactly this type of shit why I am always very weary of modern "tantra", as it is very often a breeding ground for sexual predators using spiritual language to manipulate people into ignoring their healthy sexual boundaries. 🤬
And WHEN SOMEONE IGNORES THEIR GENUINE BOUNDARIES, no matter if it's because someone is too sweet and not assertive enough against the pressure or charisma of the other person or because of some supposed spiritual goal, ONE WILL DEFINITELY GENUINELY GET DAMAGED AND TRAUMATIZED.
No matter what any so-called spiritual person would try to convince you.
(This is ofcourse very different from when you genuinely become comfortable with something and allow it because your boundaries have genuinely changed. Then ofcourse it would not damage and may become an exciting pleasurable thing. But as long as your boundaries are actually still at a certain point, you and anyone in the world are supposed to respect them if you want to remain healthy. No matter what you or others would try to convince you, if the boundary is there it will have its consequences when it's crossed)
Your exact experiences afterwards sound very similar to the experiences that many people have explained to me about their reactions after being manipulated into sex.
Even if you didn't had any penetration by the way. Intimate boundaries are personal, no matter how the standards of others would be. They are something only you can find out exactly where they are for you.
Let me explain it from this perspective:
Even in BDSM personal boundaries are the foundation of everything.
Literally everything!
That's the key difference between actual BDSM (which intends to remain healthy) and plain sexual abuse!
Even though a sub would submit to their dom, in reality the sub is the one in absolute control and only allowes to undergo that which still falls within their hard limits. If a Dom crosses the hard limits it's sexual abuse.
This is the difference where healthy BDSM actually creates a deep trusting bond and a deep sense of self confidence, whereas those pretentious fuckboy "doms" that don't understand boundaries merely cause sexual psychological damage.
In this way even with consent-to-nonconsent the sub is in full control and only allows it because in reality anything would still be within their boundaries.
(In theory ofcourse, in reality unfortunately subs are quite sometimes not fully aware of their own genuine boundaries and sometimes unconsciously perpetuate their old (sexual) traumas. So both subs and Doms always need to be extremely careful to where the genuine boundaries would actually be if they intend genuine healthy BDSM)
So for instance for myself as a sub "dissolution of boundaries (of self)" is something I absolutely love, subspace can be a deeply spiritual experience to me, but only because whenever I'd notice I've reached my hard limits I know I will act them out. So I know my safety is always assured.
This is why people are always very explicitly encouraged to stay true to their own boundaries and to not hesitate to communicate them clearly at any healthy BDSM event. Especially with new people that don't have established dynamics with one another.
So in terms of kink community the approach they had is an absolute red flag! ⛳
Especially at a party with people on drugs.
In general they shouldn't have allowed people on drugs participating their "tantric" practice, and especially not if it was their first time.
Honestly the whole thing is either extremely fucking irresponsible or straight-out fucked up sexual manipulation.
(the latter unfortunately happens way too often in "tantra", whether fully conscious or because the predators are completely deluding themselves with their "spiritual" ego 😔)

And for a final conclusion, as far as my experience with healthy sexual new age tantra goes:
When you're with someone that you have a deep stable intimate bond with and you know you can trust them with your life,
Then "dissolution of boundaries of self" can reach a level of unprecedented intimacy, communion and bliss. And when lead by radically honest inner guidance of your heart one could even achieve certain levels of intimacy and communion with the absolute Divine itself.
And if you already have such a stable deep trusting connection, psychedelics can definitely support the tantric journey or even take it to an entire new level.
But be sure that the thing you've described has nothing to do with that.
Even if it would've genuinely intended to aim for such a thing, their approach doesn't sound like it would likely be able to even get close to such a genuine tantric experience.
Like someone else said here
"New agers are camouflaging their kinks by manipulating people into believing they are having tantric sex"
And more than that, quite often exposing people to potential serious sexual/intimate trauma.
I'm sorry for this extremely long text.
I'm really bad with expressing myself in text and I have a lot of troubles with distinguishing main issues from side issues when writing (or talking).
But I got really worried when I read your text. Because I have a lot of experience with people that got traumatized in similar situations and had similar described reactions.
And unfortunately many didn't have the support around them that they needed back then it happened and sadly often had people rather trivialising it all or pushing it even further.
Also as far as I'd understand, the others here didn't seem to had offered the extent of serious support that you seemed to need for the situation.
So my mother lion instincts just forced me to reach out and to try to help as far as I can 😇
So yeah...
I don't know.
I hope it helps, and it's okay if it doesn't.
And I'm sorry if I maybe totally missed the point.
But in any way,
I hope you'll be able to nurture yourself with all the love and self-support that you need for your healing from this
And I hope you can find genuine support for your healing process around you
Much Love and sending much healing energies to you,
Lalita Luna 🌸💜🌙
(Lol, even this sort of formal letter ending...
On Reddit... 🙈 but it felt right, so oh well... 🤷‍♀️)

This is not Tantra my dear...this is just a buncha hippies getting high...

I personally believe that the spinning you experienced is a result of disconnecting from everyone's tantric energy and I find that disconnect from my single loving partner to even be confusing and sad everytime we have to come apart, so for the inexperienced on lsd in a group setting I imagine that disconnect would be jarring.

EtherealErosia•

Yeah, that experience seems pretty concerning. From a tantric standpoint, how can you really be giving "consent" when you are in an altered state where you feel out of control, confused, or really don't know what's going on? Being blindfolded while on psychedelics in an unfamiliar situation doesn't seem like it really is honoring consent. And if you're new to tantra,...that just seems even worse.

The other issue is introducing psychedelics into that situation without vetting the participants! That seems extremely irresponsible and even dangerous! All ceremonial plant medicine ceremonies I have attened involved vetting all the participants ahead of time. Also, when partaking in the use of psychedelics, set, setting, and intention are HUGE! It doesn't seem like any of that was respected.

All of that said, some profound tantric experiences I have had did involve psychedelics or other plant medicine. I do like to microdose magic mushrooms or smoke cannabis, but there is preparation in that spiritually, emotionally, and physically. I certainly wouldn't do it in a space where I was unfamiliar with my surroundings.

I'm sorry that the experience is a newer experience with Tantra, because it sounds like a lot elements in that situation were not being respected by the folks that were running that!

jennyistryingOP•

Thank you for your input.

I agree the question of (informed) consent is questionable when intoxicated in this type of situation.

Though I want to clarify, the leader/facilitator didn’t administer any psychedelics. Those that did ingested a variety of substances independently to enjoy the party- there was no spiritual intention and especially no preparation for this moment since it actually was presented as a “surprise” experience that was being offered without much information.

1
EtherealErosia•

Oh, yeah. I misunderstood your original post. That's at least better than I imagined, thank goodness. I would still say that set, setting, and intention is still important.

So was there any focus on any spiritual element outside of the blindfolded group love fest? Breathwork? Anything at all? Cuz, if not, that’s bullshit. Not tantra.

1
jennyistryingOP•

She focused on elements of self-actualization, healing, community and collective consciousness I think.

I really feel for you. I’m sorry you had to go through this. Now that some time has passed, has your perception of the event changed at all? I’ve been hearing a lot of negative anecdotes from friends who are younger than I am about burningman organizer types who turn out to be manipulative, terrible human beings. I feel fortunate I’ve never had any bad experiences like this on psychs. I am not exactly one to follow something blindly which can be both good and bad, but I wonder if that is a characteristic you could cultivate in yourself, possibly with the help of some people here. I don’t mean to sound condescending. I just want you to have great empowering experiences, and, although I wouldn’t recommend mixing tantra and psychedelics (if either one is good you don’t need the other at the same time if you’re able to be in the moment), I’m not sure either is the root cause of the experience you had to endure. I think if you could find a way to cultivate what I’m talking about you could turn this unfortunate event just to something extremely positive that will serve you jn good stead on your subsequent explorations.

Sacred_bear•

You were high as a kite. I think that's about all the answer you need.

1
jennyistryingOP•

Thanks but this is an oversimplification that doesn’t really help me learn anything in the long run. I find the state of “highness” to contain many potential layers of understanding to offer. I know people have differing opinions on this, which is ok too.

1
Sacred_bear•

Sorry but it really is about being high. I did read your post in full. You described what they had you do. A blindfolded mediation while on acid? What's more with strangers in a strange place in a meditation and needful mental state and meditation progression you had zero familiarity. That sounds like a bad idea for a person who's high. You know that setting, safe (known) people, comfort are pretty important. I've had some amazing and even revealing spiritual experiences on psychedelics but I wouldn't for my life participate in some stranger's guided meditation I had no familiarity with whilst as high as a kite because it seems like a really good opportunity to turn a good thing into a bad trip, I wouldn't go to church either. I would very much doubt it has anything to do with combining tantra (specifically) and acid.

1
jennyistryingOP•

Fair point!

Ftkhrc2•

I would agree with some other folks , I would suggest that when learning anything thst involves moving sexual energies you feel safe and 100 % within your consent , this is not a good practice to mix any substance with these practices with people you are to 100 % know . I teach a Tantra yoga practice and we review desires / expectations, boundaries safe words etc Be careful in your explorations . The blindfold event as a kink mixer with people to know , I would still say not to mix this with Pyschedelics not the best combination with strangers for keeping your body, and soul in a safe mode ..
