Started training, now what?

We started potty training my 2.5 year old over Thanksgiving, and he’s done pretty well with peeing in the potty when naked and letting us know. We tried commando with pants for a day and it was a hot mess, so we went back to naked. I did read Oh Crap, but quickly realized that my (and probably most) kiddo is not going to master this in 3 days. We also realized that it’s not possible to stay in the house for weeks until he catches on.

Now he’s back to daycare tomorrow, and they require pull ups until he’s fully trained.

Our plan is to:

  1. Pull ups for daycare & longer outings
  2. Commando at home

Is there anything different we should try or consider? Should I try training pants instead of commando at home?

I understand this may take longer to train (which we are totally fine with), but just wanted to make sure we won’t be causing regressions/confusions or delaying progress even if it takes a month or two for things to click.

as a daycare teacher tell his teachers you’ve started potty training! they may send him to try going potty more often if possible!

Hi! We are (were?) in the same boat. We just rolled with what was within our control. The only difference for us is that we opted for no pull ups with us unless it was nap/overnight, so outings we continued as commando so that it was clear that the only time we wear pull ups are sleeping and school. We started the first weekend of November and we just started underwear on Thanksgiving and she did well all weekend. I feel like we did naked the first week that she was with us (3 day weekend and then weeknights) and then switched to commando. Not sure if that helps!

Thanks, that’s reassuring!

Any tips on training when commando? I have never changed so many pairs of pants in one day. 😂

I think just giving some more time naked might help, especially if Thursday or Friday was your first day with it. We did a lot of talking about the “feeling of having to pee” and then when we put her in pants we did loose baggy joggers so it wouldn’t be tight up against her. We also tried to “hand her success” with pants so she’d stay naked until she had her first pee of the day and then we’d put pants on. I feel like we’ve done a lot of improvising based on what she’s doing and how she’s responding to the training. I think the book was helpful guideline wise, but we each know our kids best. You got this!!

Most kids do not click within 3 days, the Oh Crap author also never promoted the 3 day thing. It sets you up for failure. Somehow it manages to creep into all our consciousness and I wanted to quit on day #2 bc "3 day"!!

My 2yr old (Potty training started right after he turned 2) took 7 days to click for pee. 3 days naked, 4 days commando. We're lucky he's at home though so less logistics involved between daycare vs home. My husband took a week off to potty train. It's ok to do commando, just accept that you'll be washing pants. I washed 10 pairs on day 5 and broke down crying LOL. But it got much better after that. We were mostly accidents free after 2 wks (with regular prompting). He started initiating 3 wks into the process and at 5 wks pretty much does everything himself minus pulling pants down and wiping.

I think it'll take longer to click if daycare requires pull ups (I get why, they can't be cleaning up 20 kids' pees and poop all day long) but as long as they take him regularly he WILL click. Esp if there are potty trained kids already showing off their "skills" - kids love to learn from their peers. Try to minimize diapers when you're home. We ditched diapers for good minus at night, for longer outings we just take breaks, bring change of clothes, and put puppy pads on the car seat. I feel like as long as you get a big pee out before you leave, don't give large amount of fluid in the car, and not leave them in the car seat for more than 1 hr at a time they should be able to hold it. We bring the little potty w us while out, then 4 wks in my son was able to use big toilets at home and public toilets simultaneously
