Dispensary ATM

I live in a legal cannabis state - cash or debit only, no credit cards can be used. I’ve been going to the same dispensary for a few months now. Recently, they apparently changed their ATM/debit system. When charged, the machine automatically rounds up to the next 5 or 0 digit. For example, my total was $56 so the machine rounds up to $60 and they give me the $4 back in cash. Is this legal??? It’s not a big deal cause it’s usually a few bucks but like wtf? I also feel like it’s slightly so people just leave the cash as a tip. I’ve never encountered a system like this. And it’s not some hole in the wall type of shop. It’s a company that has many store fronts across many legal states.

Yes it's legal. They're performing an ATM withdrawal for you and you are giving them the cash you owe them. It's how they get around banks restrictions. If you don't like it just use.the ATM on the lobby that charges you $5 convenience fee.

Nope! The machine still charges the ATM fee. “If you don’t like it” I literally said it’s not a big deal.

Dispo I went to the other day rounds up cash payments by increments of 5. So if you buy something and it's $26 and you pay cash then you owe them $30. It's fucking weird and that was the last time I purchased anything from them.

???? That sounds even more illegal than what I experienced. Definitely wouldn’t ever go back there. Your issue is definitely something much more shady and unethical

Just bring cash to the weed shop, it’s a very minor thing to do. They cannot use banks like other companies, it’s a fact you have to accept if you want to partake in their wares

Normal at most shops in CA.

That is how it works in my state's dispensaries as well; or at least the ones by me. The point of sale is basically an ATM, so it's acting as a withdrawal. If I don't feel like dealing with it I'll swing by one of my bank's ATMs instead, but nbd either way.

Entirely legal and incredibly common. If you don't want to pay their fee and have it rounded up, then bring cash.

It really depends on the ATM. Most will tell you your withdrawal will have to end in a 5 or zero, some even just 0. They only have so many cassettes in the safe, for different bills. I seen some with just 20’s or higher. This allows them to easily keep 200k plus in there. It’s just a work around to give you the money you want, because it physically can’t give you 56.
