Advice for Rogue/Monk multiclassing into Cleric
For thematic purposes, one of my players wants to shift most of his rogue levels into cleric. Currently he's level 18, with 15 levels in Shadow Monk and 3 in Assassin Rogue. I'm not the best at theorycrafting, so I could use some advice in helping him figure out which cleric subclass to use. Of course the story will play into the choice, but I want to help him pick a subclass that won't feel useless at this level of play.
The other party members are a Redemption Paladin, a Spirits Bard/Bladesinger/Fiendlock, a Divination Wizard/Aberrant Mind Sorcerer, and a Death Cleric.
I'm happy to provide any more information as requested.

For pure optimization I would say that Twilight cleric makes the most sense. And is not bad for a thematic mix.
Creating dim light around him with twilight sanctuary is not only nice for the party with a bit of refreshing HP... but it also gives him a way to insure that he can use his shadow step ability to teleport around in any situation.
He has decided to go with Twilight, both for integration with his kit and theme, so thank you for your advice (and to everyone else in the thread who said much the same!).
Now the onus is on me to figure out exactly how this conversion is going to happen.
Cool glad to help. I hope that introducing Twilight Sanctuary to your games doesn't make your job harder as it IS a very powerful blanket of constant THP you have to get through to challenge them. Some DM's ban it out right. And justifiably so. But with just a few cleric levels at such a high level game, hopefully it isn't an issue in this particular instance.
I would argue the "onus" should probably be on him to come up with his own story on how and why he gains and flavors these abilities. It is his character progression and concept, so his story to tell. Your job is just to help tie his idea into your campaign world if needed.
I'm not too concerned about balance. Well, I mean, at this point we're so far beyond the realm of balance that everything is broken on both sides of a fight.
As for the story, yeah, we've been discussing it. He knows that he wants to rededicate himself to his faith after going astray and becoming too willing to commit violence to serve his goals. I more meant building the elements to facilitate the ideas we agree on.
