[2489] Untitled fantasy book, Chapter One

This is the first chapter of the first book of a trilogy. I feel like this is such an incomplete picture of the whole story, but don't know if additional context would help or hinder a critique. This is the first thing readers will read, so I leave you to it.

I'm looking for an overall critique- I'm working on learning the craft to show a quality of writing and I can already see that I've progressed since writing the first draft of this.

Specifically - I've written (or tried to write) the characters to be complex and deep and I'm interested to know if readers find themselves vested in the characters already at this point.
