Help with objective control

40k Rules

So I had my first game of 40k the other day, 1000pts against my mate's Eldar.

First turn I stuck my Ghostkeel onto the fairly exposed central objective and it did a great job shrugging off incoming damage. The problem came when it got charged by his Voidscarred Corsairs. They were having a really hard time putting any damage onto it, it's just so tanky. However the Corsairs controlled the objective through weight of numbers as the Ghostkeel only has an OC of 3.

What could I have done to take the objective back again? I can't shoot into combat and my Ghostkeel, whilst tanky, wasn't going to clear it in melee. Should I have charged another unit in there to get the OC advantage? Feels bad to commit two whole units to one objective.

At 1000pts I just couldn't prevent deepstrikes behind my hammerhead and Pathfinders which then got tied up in melee themselves. Crisis we're doing good work up at my opponents end of the board but I'd lost control over my own deployment zone.

Drive up in devilfish, fall back the ghostkeel out of engagement range, hop breachers & cadre fireblade out of devilfish. Devilfish guides breachers. Roll fist full of dice on 2+ and rerolling wounds. Let opponent pick up his unit. Point is now yours.

This is a good idea. Dont forget to use your Devilfish for screening between the breachers and the rest of your opponents army.

Did this to save my breachers from a big unit of lychgaurd the other day, very epic.

Thats awesome! I can only imagine how cinimatic it was for those breachers bracing behind the Devilfish. They just hear panels being blown off and the tank itself vibrating and getting hot from the gunfire on the opposite side... waiting for reinforcements. Couple squads of Crisis suits and a Coldstar deepstrike and flank the lychguard just in time. Dropping in like ODST from Halo.

(Id love to say they holdout until two Remoras strike teams, Kraken 1-2 and Kraken 3-4, do a gun run, but they have yet to be useful thanks to poor rules irl🙄)

Imagination truly drives this game!

When putting the GK on the objective try and only just touch the edge of the 3” control area. That way if they charge you and commit by piling-in / basing etc they are on one side of the objective.

You should take the Battle Suit Support System on the GK as it allows it to fallback and still shoot. Simply fallback over them so that your GK is still on the objective but now not in engagement range of them.

You can now shoot them with the GK to lower their OC or shoot them with another unit if you intend to use the GK to do an action like Cleanse or Homers.

This. With a devilish full of breachers :)

You can shoot into combat if your unit is Vehicle. But you get -1BS. Also Ghostkeel can fall back and shoot.

Hit roll not B.S. Soo you can negate the penalty with weapons support systems on some tau models

true that!

Also you can still spot for the shooting unit that way too.

Well your vehicle in combat can shoot into combat. The rest of your army can't shoot infantry in combat.

However as you said fall back and shoot is a big deal and as a flying unit the ghostkeel can escape easily.

Committing another unit to the objective is the solution - your only objective is to score points, so use your army to do just that!

Like someone else already said, vehicles can shoot inside of combat (with -1 to hit) and oh boy does tau have a lot of those; including the ghost keel. If you also have the fusion equipped then melta will still apply too. The rule is called Big Guns Never Tire if you want to look it up.

Slaughter the corsairs

Move the Ghostkeel out of engagement range (fallback)-- It has the battlesuit support (never take smoke) so it can still guide. Get out of engagement range but still on the objective, and kill the elves using whatever. Dont contest with tau.

How to take an objective 101.

Option 1. Shoot your opponent

Option 2. Put more OC on the objective than your opponent.

Ghostkeels can fall back and shoot, or shoot in combat because they're vehicles.

Just have them fall back and shoot at the corsairs with a couple other units and the objective is yours
