I've been here. I just looked at spoiler memes mostly ooc. Not knowing they were not that hyperbolic.
That and the people who simply labeled the game as a Saturday morning cartoon lied to me, or dont get how off that label is.
I went into the game with that mindset and slowly but surely I was breaking. Because no Saturday morning cartoon brought this much pain.
Turns out people who really dislike the story were way more accurate.

I want to know what cartoons they were watching. My childhood was Avatar, Justice League, and The Clone Wars, Kim Possible, Transformers G4, which all have amazing stories.
Some actually touch on some deep subjects like political corruption in the Republic Senate, Ba Sing Tse's propaganda and secret police, and Amazo's existential crisis.
I feel bad for whoever grew up with Engage-level writing.

He was known for being the sub's token Fates fan. He just finished Engage, and had been making memes for every chapter. As the posts go on you see him get angrier and angrier at the story.

And I don't mean like 'Conquest is really really good as a Strategy game' (which it is), I mean genuinely loves those games. He has become more popular in recent days because of his Engage Meme Series as he played through Peak Fiction which broke his soul (at least with the plot, he likes the gameplay and Alcryst which are also correct takes).
All around good dude and great internet guy to see about.

Dude blocked me because I said 3Hopes Azure Gleam had a boring Part 2, specifically focusing on the final boss pong game because I was "overly focused on forehead washing" in his words since I tangentially mentioned that AG loses a lot of good antagonists to that plot off-screen. I thought it was fairly mild criticism, but here we are.
I understand by osmosis that he's been playing Engage and disliking it more and more as time goes on recently, though I can't exactly verify that due to the above.

A funny bit before his last post was a guy who started calling him an Engage hater despite NobleYato saying that he loves the gameplay, still recommends playing it and said that there are good parts even explaining I'm detail what is wrong, even with that the guy so mad that he blocked him

It was super unfortunate. Because I dont deny that guy his joy. There are genuine arguments you can make that isnt the lazy "saturday morning cartoon" retorts. He even made some fairly decent arguments himself about the theme of family and upbringing. Which on its own is neat, I just heavily dislike how the game does it.
The characters (that arent the villains) are great. I really like Alfred and Alcryst became an underdog for me. He became one of my top 10 favorite FE characters. I almost never rank side characters higher than the MCs/Lords ever. That shows that I do appreciate the good Engage has to offer.
I even unironically think Morion is top 5 best FE dads ffs! Nobody can say I dont have a soft spot in some places lol
But because Im not jerking off Engage I apparently hate it to some people. Even though not once did my posts ever shit on the gameplay!

I thought SOV and FE7s stories were bad. Which they were. The latter was so egregious because of Nergal. Yet I never thought it would ever get worse than him.
But it did. Oh god it did. It was so bad it made me defend Nergal by comparison in terms of being better written. I've never done that for him ever.
I can't forgive Engage for that. When I start defending the cray cray man, everything is wrong.
I just cant believe that I became the two people on a bus meme in real time.

Maybe this is such a memey thing to say, but I do like to think Im not that biased towards Fates. I can recognize the bad and even agree at times.
I just think some of the more trashed story beats are at worst not that bad or at best somewhat misunderstood and flawed, but kinda good. It depends.
But things like Corrins CQ plot violence is something I agree is dumb way more often than not. Things like Azura getting cucked out of giving the cast a good reason to jump off the bridge does annoy me to no end.

Engage's story is weird in that if you aren't paying attention to it and are just here for the ride, it feels bland and generic, but fairly inoffensive outside of a few particularly notable scenes (Lumera's death, the Chapter 21-22 sequence).
It's not until you start to analyze the plot with some degree of scrutiny that it falls apart completely and realize just how nothing makes any kind of logical sense or how the game's themes are handled in a contradictory manner (i.e. Veyle being mind controlled just feels generic until you realize that it deprives her of agency in a game where one of the themes is ostensibly supposed to be free will) - which might explain the reception it's gotten so far.

Are you serious? You realize she frees herself from the mind control? I'm not going to defend mind control as a plot device because I think it's stupid how often FE does that to female characters, but there's nothing thematically inconsistent about it. Veyle is put in a position where people are doing everything they can to force her to be someone she doesn't want to be and she fights back and successfully asserts her own will. How is that inconsistent with a theme of free will? It's literally free will triumphing even in really extreme circumstances.

Veyle is physically unable to free herself from the mind control due to being mind controlled by a helmet that uses her (presumably genetic) Fell Dragon instincts to corrupt her. She has no ability to make decisions of her own, and she never chooses to be good because the reason why she joins Alear is not because of a character arc or growth of hers, but because her mind control helmet is destroyed by someone who isn't her. If Engage's themes were consistent instead of the contradictory mess that they are, then Veyle would have been fighting with Sombron out of her own volition and defected from him after coming to some sort of realization.

Her mind control didn't start with the helmet, the reason they had to make that in the first place was because Veyle wasn't letting the other version wake up. And it isn't destroyed, Marni just makes a crack in it, Veyle does most of the work herself, she doesn't instantly revert back when Marni cracks the helmet, she fights with her other self and casts them out. She doesn't choose to be good but she does choose to fight against her father and not let him control her life anymore.
