Polish Christmas Food

Hi there!

I'm on the hunt for traditional wigilia foods, but don't have time to visit every Eastern European grocer in town. I'm hoping I can crowd source the best places to get some good pierogi, uszki, maybe a premade barszcz, maybe kutia... I know there are other dishes on the traditional roster but I can't have fish in our house so... Lots of soup and dumplings I guess 😅

For context: my husband is Polish, I am not, and our kiddos are old enough to be making food memories. I'm never going to rival babcia's cooking, nor is my husband, and she's too far away for us to celebrate there. I'd like to surprise him and them with a few tastes of home, but I lack the time and skill to do it myself. (Maybe next year!)

Anyway. Best Polish grocer or deli?

Thanks!

Wedel - Touch of Europe n the Market has a good selection of Polish products. They'll set you up with pierogi, uszki, gołąbki for sure.

Barszcz is really easy to make - it might be a good dish for you to make next year.

Wedel Touch of Europe also has a location in Westboro if that's more convenient for you.

Try what is close to you, they will be busy and stuff sells out. You can buy rollmops/herring in glass too. Don’t forget Christmas baking there. Examples: Polka Deli, 1576 Walkley Rd, near Driver Test Centre. Small but lots of good stuff.

Stolichni Deli, 2280 Carling, west of Woodroffe, larger store, lots of Polish and Ukrainian

Lakomka International Deli, 1127 Baxter Rd, E of Ikea, Polka Pierogi, 1129 Baxter Rd, next door in mini mall.

Really? Evidence of that? Can you even buy anything from Russia these days? Their stock probably all come from Poland or Ukraine so they need support.

Ottawa Pierogies (near IKEA) does pre-made foods like cabbage rolls and pierogies. It leans more Ukrainian however some dishes cross over

Polka Deli on Walkley is the best in town for strictly Polish food, but they have a fairly small freezer case. Good selection of frozen pierogi and meat counter, though, and they definitely have the best selection in town for Polish import goods. Their baked goods do come from Montreal so you need to get there the day they arrive if you want them fresh, and I'm willing to bet this week is going to be insane there for Christmas food shopping. Good luck!

Mid-East Foods at St Laurent & Belfast carries a range of east-European foods like jams, tea, pickled vegetables, cookies, etc.

Might be worth a stop if you're in the area.
