Hi Ottawa!

My daughters have expressed an interest in airplanes, and wouldn't you know it - there's an air show this weekend!

I think they'd like to see the planes do their tricks, but they're both young and can feel overwhelmed in crowds. I'm curious if there's a spot we can park on Friday evening, look up to see a few planes zip by, and if that goes well then we'll buy tickets and go back on the weekend.

So: anybody have a recommendation for places to plane-watch?

Hi fellow Canadians!

Ok, so I was recently looking for a DIY telescope build kit for my homeschool coop to use, and I found a really great looking one for $20. I went to order it and it was more than $100 to ship these cardboard (!) kits from the USA to Canada. So I dug a bit deeper and found a Canadian online-only store with better kits that cost less per unit and shipping was nearly nothing. Now I'm on a mission to make myself a list of Canadian stores that sell and ship educational resources. Hoping we can build a list together.

(I searched the sub to see if this kind of list already exists but didn't find one. Apologies in advance if I somehow missed something!)

Hi Ottawa,

My daughter is interested in fossils and I can see by looking through the sub that Ottawa is a good place to go looking for them. She (and therefore I) would like to go on a fossil hunt!

My question is: is there any fossil-hunting guide around? Like a tour I could book or an expert I could hire to walk along the river and help us find what we're looking for? I see that fossils often need to be broken out of rock but I wouldn't know what kind of stone to look for, you know?

Thanks for your help!

Hi there,

I have a kindergartener who I am introducing to French this year. English is my first language, but I learned French very young and am reasonably fluent. This year, so far, we are making reasonable progress just having conversations at the dinner table. (I use a sock puppet who is very high energy as our French teacher. We learn a few new phrases and a bit of vocabulary from her every week and then practice away from the table.)

Anyway... I'm already thinking ahead to next year and I'm anticipating that having something concrete to look at and write in may be helpful, not only because we can refer back to it but also because it will give my wild sock puppet some structure. I wi

Hi there! Thinking about signing up my soon to be 5 year old daughter for guides or scouts. She can feel overwhelmed in social situations and could use some practice with kind peers. Curious if anyone has experience and feedback with either group in the area?

Hi all!

Have a nearly 5 year old and don't have to register her officially for another 2 years so we're going to give homeschool a go. I'm brand new to this.

I'm doing my reading and trying to understand the best practices and have flagged the curricula that interest me most. However, I can't find anything that really meaningfully touches on drama. I'm probably looking in all the wrong places, so I figured I'd ask here. Have you encountered a drama curriculum that you really like?

(I hold a doctorate in theatre and performance studies and have taught middle and high school drama, so it's possible that I'm being too exacting... I'm very willing to hear about what is adequate for element

Hi there!

I'm on the hunt for traditional wigilia foods, but don't have time to visit every Eastern European grocer in town. I'm hoping I can crowd source the best places to get some good pierogi, uszki, maybe a premade barszcz, maybe kutia... I know there are other dishes on the traditional roster but I can't have fish in our house so... Lots of soup and dumplings I guess 😅

For context: my husband is Polish, I am not, and our kiddos are old enough to be making food memories. I'm never going to rival babcia's cooking, nor is my husband, and she's too far away for us to celebrate there. I'd like to surprise him and them with a few tastes of home, but I lack the time and skill to do it mysel

Hi Ottawa,

Heavens help me, but my 3 year old saw a video of some kids skating and has been asking about going every single day since.

A thousand years ago I learned to skate on the canal and wouldn't wish that on anyone. I still feel unsure when I skate on smooth ice as I'm always expecting bumps. I'm looking to do this better for my daughter. So...

Where did you teach your littles to skate? Are there rinks that are especially toddler friendly? If I wanted to get my hands on one of those push frames to help her fall less, do they rent those out at rinks? Do classes for skating exist? If so, do you have any experience with them and would you recommend one?

Thanks for any advice!

Hi nerds!

I bounced about a thousand ideas off y'all a little while ago. We've narrowed and talked about it. Wanted to do a vibe check (and just general check, I guess, on where we seem to have landed). 3 year old is Ophelia Ripley. Baby girl arriving in a couple weeks... We're feeling Penelope Juno.

What do you think?

Hey there!

My husband and I have started the process of finding a name for our kiddo. We don't know if it's a girl or boy, so we're working on lists for both. We've got a few girl name contenders, but haven't yet hit on a single boy name that we both are excited about. I'm hoping that you can add some names to our boy list to give us some more options to think about. Bonus points if you can suggest a middle name too, but for now the first name is the big project. (Our last name is hyphenated, and a mouthful, if that matters.)

So. Names we like. Our toddler is Ophelia Ripley, and we love her and her name to bits.

Current list of boys names ...

I like: Calvin Hugo Sebastian Elliott Sawyer

Hi there,

I'm a teacher, and my students are trying to understand why people do (or don't) go to see live theatre performances. I'm posting their work here because I'm trying to get them responses beyond their own circles of friends and family. If you have a moment, please consider responding to one or a few of their surveys. They shouldn't take you more than a few minutes each.

(I haven't had a say in the creation of these surveys. You may find some questions unclear. I'm afraid I can't provide any clarity. I'm just the messenger in this case.)

Thanks!
