Let’s get out of New Jersey

There’s no recent event that’s impacting me feeling like this I’ve just gone to more games this season than I ever have and can say that it seems like a pretty raw deal for the entire state of New York for our stadium to be where it is.

When I lived on Long Island I’d only go to one game a year because the drive from Bayport to MetLife was 2 hours and the drive back could go over three if the game was worth watching until the end. Back then I hated it but I always kind of bought in that it was close enough to the city and that’s the major market.

Unfortunately, I live in the city now and the transportation still sucks. I’ve had to hop out of an Uber because he refused to go anywhere but the Lincoln Tunnel. I’ve driven a couple of times but our stadium being in both an industrial wasteland and Siamese-twinned with that abomination of a mall makes parking and especially leaving hell on earth. Leaving the Eagles game too me 2 hours which is insane if you saw the actual distance I drove.

Overall, I love the Jersey fan base we’ve built up over the years and I’d hate to screw them over but the fact that it sucks this much to attend games in person is a uniquely NY football problem that no other NY team faces except maybe the Red Bulls (lmao)

TLDR: I don’t care if jersey is in the “New York metro area” let’s build a stadium in the “New York state boundaries” area

I agree that playing in the NJ swamp sucks and a stadium in one of the boroughs would be awesome, but it’s kinda bizarre that the only complaints you included are 4 paragraphs about how long it takes you to get to and from games lol

Yeah this was kinda personal but I can only speak for myself lmao. There’s only one road outta there so I kinda figured it’s universal but I’m down to hear otherwise

The stadium is actually very convenient for me and I support you wanting to move. I'd go to less games (which is good) and the stadium stinks.

AJSoprano1985•

I live 10 minutes from the stadium. But I haven’t been to a game since 2013. I’m not gonna straight up tell you to not come to the games, but especially in shitty weather, it’s not a bad idea to just stay home and watch the games on TV… also considering how far you live.

On top of all that, the product this organization has put on the field has obviously been nothing to write home about, which is the main reason why I haven’t gone to a game in 10 years despite living so close to the stadium.

Tobar_the_Gypsy•

I actually prefer watching the game at home. I grew up in Bergen county and getting there was super easy (no traffic on Sundays). I even had good season tickets. But it’s nice to sit back and watch the game on a good TV with better angles.

I love the experience but I’m not able to do that all season long.

Miserable_Net_6846•

I gave up my season tickets because of the product! Had tickets from 1994-2014

Fjordice:Retired_Chrebet: Wayne Chrebet•

I've only been to a handful of stadia but MetLife is by FAR the easiest and quickest to get in and out by driving. Caveat: meaning specifically getting to and out of the parking lots, not necessarily surrounding traffic, but also for me personally very easy to get towards my parents' home in north-central New Jersey. I realize that's not the case for the majority of the fan base, so I also support moving it closer or into the NYC area.

1
AbysswalkerXOP:Deluca::Delvechio: 16 17 18 World Champs•

That just hasn’t been my experience at all. At its worst I was stuck in line in the parking garage for over an hour before I even hit the turnpike

4
Fjordice:Retired_Chrebet: Wayne Chrebet•

Fair enough I've never parked in the garage. It's quite bad other places though. I've had 3+ hours getting out of the parking lots at Gillette, not including the traffic and travel time home. Just from parking spot to the road, 3 hours lol

Az89732134769•

Sounds good let’s do it. if we can convince everyone in this sub to put down 100 dollars, we’ll only be 1.49 Billion short for a new stadium

26
AbysswalkerXOP:Deluca::Delvechio: 16 17 18 World Champs•

Some Jets fans are already paying off the Bills new stadium so just add ours to the list lmao

14
Az89732134769•

The fact that taxes go into funding so many of these stadiums and these franchises have the audacity to charge high prices afterwards is so crazy to me

Citi Field should have been built to accommodate football

3
Tobar_the_Gypsy•

That would’ve been cool but also would provide terrible sight lines.

1
69Hairy420Ballsagna:Retired_Chrebet: Wayne Chrebet•

At lease MetLife was privately funded

9
Norby710•

If you are going to do it from the city, take the bus. It still sucks but it’s the best of the worst I’ve found. But I also don’t go to home games anymore and will just do 1 or 2 road games.

9
AbysswalkerXOP:Deluca::Delvechio: 16 17 18 World Champs•

I’ll give that a shot but yeah with the stress of going to home games I’d rather just make a trip of it and go somewhere cool

1
zach7797•

As someone who lives in North jersey nag stay in jersey I hate driving in the city Meadowlands is so much more convenient for me

9
AbysswalkerXOP:Deluca::Delvechio: 16 17 18 World Champs•

That’s fair. I’d have to imagine coming from jersey wouldn’t be as bad because you skip the tunnel or bridge dilemma

1
MetsBBT•

did a Bills fan write this for you

(I’m kidding, I literally have never been to MetLife bc I’m from LI and getting there is very tough but I’m not sure where the ideal spot would be)

You haven't been missing much.

3
AbysswalkerXOP:Deluca::Delvechio: 16 17 18 World Champs•

I’ve felt the pain of going from Long Island. If you ever decide to, go to a 1pm game only or else you’ll be getting home after midnight if it’s a walk-off

2
jt09874•

The West Side Stadium was our last chance. Those plans being foiled was the biggest travesty for all Jets fans.

6
Green__Bananas•

Jets should be in Long Island or queens

5
iceturtles:Corndoggy3:•

Ok I’ve been thinking we should actually play on a field on a mega jet

4
ForsakenRacism•

Sell the team to uncle Steve and build on queens

4
Stockersandwhich•

You understand you can’t just build a stadium, right? It’s a 5-10 year process?

-3
AbysswalkerXOP:Deluca::Delvechio: 16 17 18 World Champs•

UBS arena went up in 2 years

2
Stockersandwhich•

It was a process from 2015-2021

1
Stockersandwhich•

Buying land, permits, bids, etc are all part of the process

1
ForsakenRacism•

Yah so? Plenty of teams have been through it. You either stay where you are till it’s done or you lease something temporarily

1
Stockersandwhich•

People act like it’s going to be built in a day. Where the fuck are you leasing a football stadium in the metro area?

-1
ForsakenRacism•

No one thinks that. If they got a new stadium they prolly just stay in met life till it was done. If they got kicked out they’d go to like Citi field or something. The chargers played in a tiny soccer stadium for a couple years.

2
rkbk23:LogoRetroWordmark2:•

I think the ideal spot would be somewhere in queens, Brooklyn or Long Island city. This radius would be sort of central to Manhattan, Long Island and NJ. There’s lots of different transportation options. Airports nearby and lots of options to stay for out of towners. Also makes it easy for vacationers to get into manhattan which is obviously a big pull for a lot of people visiting a jets game. I stayed in a hotel near MetLife recently (not for a game) and it was a nightmare getting into and out of the city.

The obvious issue is the availability of land. A couple I know of would be to build on top sunnyside yard, the flushing fountain, citi fields parking lots, and near the Brooklyn army terminal. That spot would be cool because I really like that building.

4
AbysswalkerXOP:Deluca::Delvechio: 16 17 18 World Champs•

That’s exactly would I would love to happen. I’ve been holding out for a decade for Willets Point but they’re building an MLS stadium there so I think that’s out of the question sadly

1
Tobar_the_Gypsy•

Unfortunately none of those locations would work. I just moved from Astoria and would love it to be there but we can’t build in those spots. Sunnyside can’t hold that weight, Flushing wouldn’t destroy that park and Citi Field doesn’t have the space for a stadium that big (and cannot build on the parking lots, that’s park space).

1
rkbk23:LogoRetroWordmark2:•

Not the whole park, just the dead fountain area. There have been proposals in the past to do stuff with it.

1
Minimum_Customer4017:LogoRetroWordmark3:•

So the red tape needing to be cleared to build a new Jets stadium on the parking lot immediately west of Citi Field is actually pretty minimal. The legislation passed in the 1960's to allow for Shea to be build on the park land would still apply. The former Mets owners tried to build a mall there and were told it's outside the scope of what the legislation allowed for. It's really limited to a sports stadium and concert venue plus the associated parking.

NYC offered the Jets a new stadium immediately east of Shea in the 80's but the Jets declined. It's really surprising to me that after the mall got shot down, a new football stadium or hockey arena never came up.

1

pls don't build it in fucking brooklyn lmao you'd never get near the place on game day as though that borough doesn't have enough traffic

1
rkbk23:LogoRetroWordmark2:•

Lol I believe you. Trains wouldn’t be viable?

1
Unverifiablethoughts:gwilson:•

Nothing on Long Island would be ideal. The majority of the fan base is outside of Long Island and you’d be forcing them to cross Manhattan every game day. There’s no land and the real estate costs and taxes would be astronomical.

1
rkbk23:LogoRetroWordmark2:•

The majority of the fan base is outside of Long Island

Not sure if that’s true.

and you’d be forcing them to cross Manhattan

Well long islanders have to do this currently..

There’s no land and the real estate costs and taxes would be astronomical.

There is land but of course it would be expensive. The point is that the benefits of being in NY would outweigh those costs.

1
Unverifiablethoughts:gwilson:•

As stated, we’ve done a poll on it a bunch of times. Twitter has done it as well. Long Island is densely populated but to say that there are more jet fans in those two counties than Manhattan, the Bronx, westchester, Rockland, orange, Bergen, Essex, union and middlesex…. counties combined is naive. Long Islanders live in the bubble of all bubbles.

The jets played in Long Island for 20 years and have been out of Long Island for 40. The idea that they’re a Long Island team is a myth that only gets repeated by long islanders.

Because of Namath, they were equally as popular outside of Long Island as they were on the island.

Before the Mets were a team, long islanders rooted for a mix of dodgers (mostly), the giants, and the Yankees. There were a lot of displaced fans looking for their own team.

Before the jets, long islanders just rooted for the giants. Happily since the giants were historically good and a part of the fabric of being a New Yorker.

If they put a new nfl team in Suffolk county, do you think it would take longer than twenty years for the whole area to switch allegiances?

1
rkbk23:LogoRetroWordmark2:•

I don’t know anything about all that. So I’ll ask again since you didn’t answer, you’re implying the ideal location is in NJ?

1

Add it to your christmas list or move to Jersey.

-1†
Lumpy-Return•

Agreed, give NJ the Nets back and you can have the Jets.

3
killopatra•

What if the Jets and Giants built another stadium in NY and swapped homegames between NY and NJ like a joint custody situation?

3†
killopatra•

maybe even a third stadium just for flexibility, lots of options to explore.

3
TOO_MANY_NAPKINS•

They should have built the stadium in Utica because that's inside the state boundaries and that's important for some reason.

3
AbysswalkerXOP:Deluca::Delvechio: 16 17 18 World Champs•

I was thinking Potsdam but that works too

Nj jets

I do my best to avoid the port authority as a rule but I might try it next year

So you have mass transit options

1

I hate going to metlife. it's like 5 hours of driving minimum

2
clarkeer918•

take the train

1
Tobar_the_Gypsy•

The train from Long Island is a hike. I went to MetLife once from Astoria and it was a pain to take 3 trains to get there.

That said, OP lives in the city. It’s not that bad from the city.

1
clarkeer918•

I hear that! I don’t mind the ride by car. It takes about 1.5 hours from CT
