He is under the max weight for 6U heavyweight- I think it’s at least 80 for Nuway and AAU- might even be 90 now. There won’t be many kids, but he’s certainly not too big. If you think he’s ready- just wrestle 8U. My son was 115 when he started at 7.
thanks alot.. 8u sounds like the plan
If he is inexperienced throwing him to the wolves in 8u may not be advised. Losses are hard at any age but especially at a young age. Let him build up some confidence and get a foot into the sport first. Assuming he is going to dominate because he is big is not advised. There are a lot of killers out there waiting to humble you no matter what your ability is. What is your child’s experience with wrestling? Does he know how to defend himself against technical moves? If not you may be dooming him to hate the sport by putting him in over his head.
This is great advice. Many times if there are no kids at his weight they offer to let them wrestle up. I wouldn’t do it again in an open- tough lesson learned. Depending on your child, a local novice tournament may be ok wrestling up. Does he want to compete or does he just like practice? My son stated he wanted medals so we let him compete. This year, he just wants to do a few tournaments- he loves practice but doesn’t want the medals any more- just a few and then he wants a state medal.
I was a college athlete and was naturally strong and athletic as a youngster, my son is WAY more athletic than I ever was. We had him practice for a whole year as a 6u. Didn’t even enter any tournaments. His first year of 8u we started doing tournaments. He went 1-2 and 2-2 pretty often. He was having a blast even though he lost all the time which is what was important to me. This year in his third year he is winning tournament’s regularly. Having a lot of fun and growing as a wrestler. It’s great to witness. I feel like we really nailed it with his progression and keeping the sport fun and inviting. I would be super cautious having a young wrestler wrestle up in age. You want to keep it fun and engaging and I’ll be the first to tell you there is nothing fun about being rag dolled by someone that is way stronger than you are.
