Next week we'll be reading about The Verge's first look inside Google's first store.

Jep, this pretty much confirmed the stores.

For Nexus, I don’t think the program is far enough along to think about the necessity of having these things in a retail store.

Bullshit, they need all the ammo they can get to put Samsung back in line.

Especially for their Nexus line. Many have thought my Nexus 7 was a Kindle Fire. shudder

I get: "is that the mini iPad?"

They even get the name backwards.

And Samsung's phones are like: the normal galaxy, big galaxy, and the bigger galaxy with a pen.

It's ok, I don't know shit about Soccer or American football, so that makes me more ignorant than them in the eyes of most people which coincidentally could be called "them".

I hear you, I feel it's like 9/10 times (no exaggeration) people think my N7 is a mini iPad; it goes without saying I get pretty excited when someone knows it's a N7 :)

Funny, but it just happened to me 5 minutes ago. Once a while someone will ask if it's a nexus 7 and I'll gladly respond yes.

I was in a apple store and a apple employee came up to me and asked me how I liked my iPad Mini. He was pretty embarrassed when I said it was a Nexus 7.

They want Samsung to succeed. It's good business for them.

True, but personally it just nicks me that Manufacturers get to put their own skin over *AOSP. I would love the Note 2 to run Stock Android, but I know manufacturers take a long time to update their OS or don't bother to so they can push people to get newer hardware; Frankly that's business.

Sorry, but it's AOSP, not AOKP.

Thanks. Just changed it. I confuse them at times, Sorry r/Android .

Also,AOSP wouldn't necessarily make updates faster since it isn't Googles job to update each device on the market. Samsung has to test and adjust its drivers, so tweaking the skin might as well take lace simultaneously. It would be good if Samsung could update one without the other. Have Android update and also TouchWiz update on separate intervals.

put Samsung back in line

LMAO what's next, make Android closed-source? Android's goal was to saturate the mobile market with Google services and make it indispensable, not spread AOSP. Which is why some improvements are first seen on iOS.

Whatever though, keep fapping to your #HOLO gods.

Google fears that with Samsung becoming so prominent, it could ask more concessions from Google or else simply fork Android the way Amazon did.

That's what success in business comes down to, you don't gain leverage and be a nice guy and ignore it.

OK, well Google doesn't want that right? Hell, I don't want Samsung making decisions either.

I think having stores would push it far enough along

1
redditbotboy•

That's good because they would always be out of stock of most things.

RedPandaAlexNexus 5, Nexus 10•

I was just thinking I hoped they would do this, and that they'd provide a service where you could have some biometric scans done and linked to your account in case you lose access to it. I have nightmares about losing access to my Google account. It'd be nice to be able to go into a Google store and have a retinal scan to restore it.

I don't see them getting into retail if they don't have to.

Worst case I could see them doing like Verizon and having "authorized resellers."

But opening a fleet of stores even for a large money heavy company like Google is still a lot of money. There are a lot of people who walk into the store to get a new phone, but there are plenty who just call the provider and order it that way as well.

"Authorized resellers" would easily cover that, and there are plenty who would probably clamor for the right and pay for the space and similar themselves just for the right to sell the phones/other hardware and take a cut on each sale, which will still result in Google making plenty of coin and more importantly, getting market penetration since obviously the phones, etc. would default to Google for everything.

Who says you have to buy from them?

I'm probably part of the reason Best Buy has had to close stores because I'll go in there to look at something and see if I like it, then go home and find it online for a good price and order it.

2
ashe123•

I do the same but just recently best buy now price matches a lot of popular online retailers like amazon and newegg. Handy when you need something right away.

1
dageekywon•

I use Best Buy to evaluate, so I go in there with an open mind, then go home and buy what I have decided on.

I guess I could make a second trip after my research, but since with Amazon I have stuff that allows me discounts deeper than Best Buy would go (I own a small business, so I buy a lot of stuff for it through then and others like Tiger Direct, etc) I usually won't pay shipping anyway. Sure I could burn the gas to go back, and I have when I'm gong somewhere close, but usually I just go home and order since my nearest location is ~20ish miles away.

I don't think its having a large impact but I'm sure I'm not the only one who has an idea in mind and walks in, looks a few options over, then goes home and orders. Not even just for the discount.

This. There needs to be a way where I can get out if bed, drive to Best Buy and I test / buy a Nexus device. For the average consumer they can at least compare the Nexus Devices with other companies hardware & software.

It took me nearly 6 months to find a Nexus 7 in a store that I could play with, and even then it didn't have an internet connection. The state of Android at retail is downright shameful.

Truth be told I didn't even see a Nexus 7 prior to the internet before I got mine. It is a shame.

The only product I could see Google needing a store for is Glass, and they would just need pop up stores like Microsoft. People will want to try Glass, they'll be willing to go to a store to try them out, and having a bunch of Google products for them to look at when they do would be great.

2
thoomfishNexus 5, Nexus 7 (2013), Shield Portable•

Not just Glass. Having a place where you can look at actually well-maintained Android phones/tablets would be killer. I wonder how many people have been turned off the platform by going to a Best Buy or Fry's or what-have-you to sample tablets and finding that only the iPad turns on / has internet.

3
weirdearNexus 5 (Wind Mobile) | Nexus 7 (2013) | Moto G•

True, I don' think I explained what I meant well at all. I think Glass will be the reason they open stores, because it will get people into the stores and then they will also look at phones/tabs/chromebooks/whatever else. Not that stores wouldn't be good without them, but that they'll be the big reason I think there will be stores.

Despite being so excited by them, I still have literally, not once, played with an Asus Transformer. Because in 3 different Best Buys and in J&R, they are always broken. What the shit? Maintain your goddamn demo models.

1
haloimplantGalaxy S4•

I guess they need stores about as much as the Nexus 7 needed more than 16GB storage.
