DS9 3x22 Explorers
I have been watching my way through DS9 recently, (I'm a couple episodes into the 4th season as we speak) having not seen further than season 2 before. I reaches this episode the other day and wanted to praise it.
We of course know that the people of Earth have moved beyond monetary pursuits, and instead find other ways to bring their days meaning. I found this episode to be the truest manifestation of this ethic.
(I am going to give an episode summary here, skip to the last paragraph if you are in a hurry.)
We see Sisko decide on a whim to build a Bajoran solar sail powered lightship, after learning about their contentious history, sailing through space when humans were still sailing the oceans, and how there were rumours they even reached as far as Cardassia (with the implication being the Cardassians may have suppressed this history to cement their supremacy during the occupation).
He gets told by a couple characters that his pursuit is silly. Refusing to use modern tools, instead insisting on using what the Bajorans had (he added artificial gravity because microgravity makes him queasy which was cute), and he ends up finishing his incredibly impressive vessel.
Dukat makes a typically veiled threat to the safety of his voyage.
Skipping ahead here, technobabble shenanigans occur, and he and his son end up marooned in space with navigation. They get picked up by the Cardassians, turns out they actually reached Cardiassia like the ancient Bajorans did.
I thought they were going to be given an ultimatum here. "We'll rescue you of you promise to lie about reaching Cardassia." They weren't. Instead they were congratulated, and told they had "found" wreckage of ancient Bajoran lightships and were going to announce that along with his successful odyssey. They set off space fireworks!
Sisko's construction and sailing of this lightship, motivated by the best principles of the federation, led to actual diplomatic warming between Cardassia, Starfleet, and Bajor, and for suppressed history regarding the capabilities of Bajor being uncovered. Are there more dramatic episodes? Of course. I've seen some of them, and know vague spoilers of one or two to come. But this episode was Starfleet.
