QPAD vs Dignitas, more DDOSing in this game too.

Other | eSports

Sneyking D/C, his teammates say his getting DDOSed and is restarting his modem.

What do? PLS RIOT FIX

Also does this rarely happen in Asian scene because many of the top teams over there live in teamhouses? Removing the need for Skype thus it's much harder to find the I.P Address of teams like i.G/LGD.

TBH this is just pucking crappy and something needs to be done. aL vs EG ruined. Kapai vs VP ruined. Now what?

This is just getting retarded. Something needs to be done about this. I don't know what, but action needs to be taken. 3 alleged DDOS attack in 2 days ridiculous. I feel really bad for the admins and the players, this is obviously not in their control and may have pretty bad consequences.

The solution is to stop using Skype.

Just. Stop. Using. Skype.

I love people who think skype is the only issue. As a somewhat techy person I could get someones IP through IRC, steam, ventrilo, and probably other voips and chats which i havent tried it on. Avoiding skype isnt the solution

20
eGORapTure•

The whole issue is that with skype if you have someones username then you have their IP. Skype also doesn't encrypt any of this data. It is all in plain text. Any script kiddie can pay for access to a botnet, look up your IP from skype and boom you are dos'd.

11
semi-you casted this? I casted this.•

You couldn't get it through ventrilo(or mumble, or anything else) if youd idn't know the server. With skype all you need is their username, which is fairly common knowledge in addition to showing up on stream.

8
Because_Im_madnavi•

Listen to this man, because you can go through significantly more effort to get an IP through other means, we might as well ignore that Skype has been the problem almost every time in the past.

5
WinterAyars•

IRC is, indeed, vulnerable. However, it's not "if i know your user name i know your IP" vulnerable.

Aside from that, running IRC through a proxy or IP anonymizer (or getting a network that conceals IPs, which i believe is possible) is easier since... well... it's IRC instead of a VOIP program.

Here's the Skype fix:

  1. Go to Control Panel
  2. Go to "Uninstall a Program"
  3. Uninstall Skype
  4. Never use that buggy, insecure propriety piece of shit ever again.
  5. Ensure your IP address is changed from the last time you logged into said buggy insecure propriety piece of shit.
  6. Install and use RaidCall/Ventrilo/Mumble/Teamspeak/ANYTHING THAT ISN'T SKYPE.
109
zoanthropy•

The problem isn't just teams using Skype to talk during a match. Tournament organizers/admins need to stop using Skype as well to schedule matches with teams, because that is still making everyone have to use Skype.

It doesn't matter if you're using Mumble or RaidCall or whatever during your game, if you still have to talk to the tournament admins over Skype to set everything up.

Basically, the only solution to the problem is to have literally the entire scene of Dota stop using Skype and switch to something else. Which would be a challenge.

49
TurkishWaiter•

*7. Lose the ability to communicate with other teams to arrange scrimming, tournament admins, team managers, sponsors etc..

Do you think people are using Skype because it's a really great program that works well with no problems? No, they use it because of its proliferation.

5†
rabbs•

Exactly! I really don't get why this is that big of an issue. Skype is AWFUL and full of gaping security holes, and Mumble is objectively better in every way. Have your 4 teammates all download Mumble, problem solved. It takes two minutes at most.

Skype is for talking to grandmas. My buddies and I have had a Ventrilo for years upon years... better latency, no security holes with all of the features and then some.

3
grlundahl•

If only there were a different program that would give ALL the same features as skype. Sure mumble/vent/teamspeak give better audio communication between teammates but skype is used for organizing scrims and stuff like that. If your team is the first to switch off you lose that line of communication, you lose the easy access to high level scrims.

4
1eejit•

Use Steam's own text and voice chat? Steam community group chat rooms (which allow voice)?

10
keezy88•

This was my thought instead of using skype. My buddies and I just do a group chat and all is well. We don't need an extra program up and taking up bandwidth.

1

Dolby Axon; you can make private "chat rooms" where people can just go in and out.

3
[deleted]•

Was about to make this same comment.

Personally I hate Skype, and was a Vent fanboy for years. Eventually tried and hated Raidcall and Teamspeak but switched to Mumble for audio quality. Was eventually shown Axon and haven't gone back since.

It has all the features you need and none of the features you don't, IMO.

I don't need an IM client or Overlay (Skype, Raidcall), I don't need a special server (Ventrillo, Mumble, Teamspeak). Axon has none of those (at least by default).

Text chatting is available, but it's a side-feature rather than a main feature, which works much better IMO.

Also, there was no audio setup at all for Axon. I've heard of nobody having issues with the voice-activated transmission if they have a headset.

Compared to everything else I've used, the setup was the fastest and the program works perfectly. I love it so much that I refuse to use anything else.

Sorry, bit of a rant, but man this axon is some sexiness.

4
WinterAyars•

"All" of the features of Skype include getting DDOSed :)

Mumble has some nice features that Skype lacks, as well.

Why is DDOSing happening now?

  • To prevent losing items (seems really petty, but possible) - it seems the trend is to DDOS the team that is ahead in the match to nullify the result

  • Just to fuck with Dota for the sake of it (seems more likely)

  • The person doing it is a Dota hater/League of Legends fan (CONSPIRACY BAN RIOT PLZ)

Whatever is done, it must be done soon.

Generally you have to pay big money in the US to get a static IP, so almost certainly people are getting DHCP IPs.

Depends entirely on your ISP.

1

You don't need to contact the ISP most of the time. Unplug modem/router, wait 5-10 minutes, plug them back in.

You might want to check your WAN IP (use a site like whatismyip.com) before and after to make sure it did actually change.

If so, they'll have to re-acquire the IP.

Has he changed his IP address since then though? If his ISP provides a dynamic IP then restarting the router will be sufficient, but if it's static then he'd need to contact his ISP. Raidcall, Ventrilo, TeamSpeak, something else OTHER than Skype.

What is so hard about switching services to prevent things like this? Simply enable mic being always on instead of Push-To-Talk if you want the same "Skype" effect

-1†
Xhaileu•

Some teams use Teamspeak to talk to each other, but Skype is not just used for the team to talk to each other. They have to contact the admins of the tournament, they have to contact mangers, other people. You can't leave skype alone. In addition to this, someone might use skype for contacting friends and family.

The problem lies with how easy it is to access someones skype ID and since everyone has skype it is a pain.

Give us another way your IP can be exposed that easily ? Appart from the attacker tricking someone to visit a link on one of his site, I don't see how.

3

Currently the suspicion is that Dota2Lounge may have something to do with it.

Not the owners of the website, but the website's betting feature. A lot of the DDoSed teams have been the ones where the bets are stacked in their favour, meaning whoever bet against them (and possibly the one who is doing the DDoS attacks) will win big in his bets.

GodZ did however make it clear on the BTS stream today that bets on matches that dont actually get played to the end though, have their bets completely nullified, so it's just a theory some people are throwing around.

6

I guess that stops you just DDOSing the opponents so they have to forfeit.

The problem is that if you're team is losing, you can just get the matches nullified so that you don't lose any money. Essentially removing any chance of losing money if your DDOS is effective.

Because 1) He doesn't have a 100% dynamic IP so doing the router reset did jack shit. 2) From everything I've read, the one thing they haven't tried is not using Skype. 3) Nothing will happen to the DDoSers.

If Skype is how they are getting their IPs, then fucking uninstall Skype, call your ISP and request an IP change.

0
RandomWorkAccount•

yeah most ISPs has dynamic IP BUT theres also a system in place that connects your IP-adress to the MAC-adress you're connecting from, which gives you a pseudo-static IP-adress. So restarting the modem might not help.

3
SundayVibesHey! I'm a predator•

I guess you could spoof it if you were REALLY concerned. Not sure how it works exactly but if I recall correctly you can assign your MAC to 0 which generates a random address on every request.

I've heard some ISP's block your connection as soon as it recognises a foreign device so it might not work at all but I guess it's worth the research with all that's going on.

I'm probably completely wrong but that's what I remember from somewhere sometime. I guess it's time to go google things!

1
darkenspirit•

If there is huge traffic to someones router the ISP can reset the IP but very often a machine/program will automatically just cut off all service to that router or put them on an isolated network first and they will have to call comcast to get that sorted out and that will still require time because very often first line customer support does not have the authority to override a lock like that because it is suspicious criminal activity.

While sneyking should probably be excused here since he apparently tried his best, teams should really be educating players properly about what actually is the problem and how to circumvent it. It possible sneyking leaked his ip earlier and just isnt aware of the fact that this is the problem even if he hides skype. Also he might have leaked it through the browser.

The only reason why anyone properly educated might encounter problems would be if they have a fixed ip. That would seriously suck.

8
BurritoEclair•

I don't know what you mean by hiding his skype. But I've seen him log on and off constantly the past 10 minutes.

I agree players should be educated about this kind of stuff and if pro teams want to keep competing in these online tournements they'll need to take the right precautions and warn their players. Maybe invest in a VPN for their players.

Much Ado About Dota is probably going to have a long conversation about this whole thing.

2
dabu•

VPNs are pretty bad for gaming though and according to them they used a VPS for Skype which works just fine. This is what i meant with hiding skype and it was the solution advocated these last days on reddit as well.

The problem is that its not a comprehensive solution if you dont fully understand the problem. So they can definitely learn from this and i think if another attack happens tomorrow i think its time for zero tolerance since there has been ample time for players to find solutions.

According to auis twitter i read two things now. Firstly they didnt make sure they had fresh ips after implementing the skype VPS and secondly there might be a way to get the ip through steam friends but if that is the case you can always go offline in the steam friends service so there is pretty much fixes for everything except a static ip which you might have revealed weeks ago when this issue was not prominent.

1
Gozujohn2k•

If Sneyking and his team are experiencing what they think is DDoS due to Skype publicly showing their IP-addresses, why are they still using Skype?

The majority of ISP's provide dynamic IP for privat customers, simply restarting your router and not using Skype would eliminate any DDoS threat.

7
SCLegend•

They don't think it's skype.

Restarting your router or requesting a new IP from your ISP will solve the problem. If you have a DYNAMIC IP, your IP should change by a simple router restart. If you have a STATIC IP, you probably have a server and should request a new IP from your ISP.

21
YouHaveShitTaste•

Resetting your router might renew your IP, or it might not. It depends entirely upon your ISP. Also, many ISPs will not just change your IP upon request, and some will actually charge you to do it.

6
Gozujohn2k•

If you are the victim of a DDoS, the amount of requests being send is over what their lines capacity can handle. In this case, they must solve it according to custom regulations - at least within the EU.

3
Joshgt2It's Time To D-D-D-DUEL!•

100% correct. It's very simple to protect against this crap. I would have been making the phone calls to my ISP and setting up my VPN when everyone ELSE was having these issues.

1
olevaar•

Not really. Restarting your router might change your IP-address, or it might not. It all depends on how your ISP allocates addresses to the clients.

Locally, your router will most likely remember your MAC address, and try to give the same computer the same address every time. Now, it might not do this every time, but usually it will. It's the same for the POP and your router. Most of the time, if your previous address is available, it will remember that, and provide you with the same address when your router syncs.

Edit: Well, getting downvoted... I encourage you to try and reset your router, then check your IP again. Most likely it will not have changed. This is because, as I have explained, most ISPs use "sticky" dynamic IP address allocation.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_address#Sticky_dynamic_IP_address

0
sunzoo•

You would actually have to be able to tell your ISP to release your DNS lease. Otherwise when restarting your router you just have their DHCP server hand out the same address based on your routers MAC address.

1
Gozujohn2k•

According to my ISP, since my IP is dynamic, I will never be sure to retain the same address when restarting my router. (This came directly from their technicians).

2
pLuhhmmbuhhmm•

Well, once someone finds your ip address they have it forever, unless you change isp or something. Shutting skype down won't do anything.

No. Just no.

  1. Most ISPs are different. Some do straight dynamic and static IPs, and some do a hybrid. You cannot get a new IP by resetting your router, they just randomly reassign you one.

  2. They have an IP forever. Not yours... I don't even know of any residential ISPs that do strictly static IPs.

3
WinterAyars•

Residential ISPs will do static IP, but you have to cough up big money for it. Usually on the order of $20-$30/month just for the static IP on top of your other service. (Which is insane and doesn't make any damn sense, but that's a different story.)

1
pLuhhmmbuhhmm•

I should have reworded that last sentence.

I don't even know of any residential ISPs that do strictly static IPs by default.

DDoS is a sad biproduct of the internet and sadly almost risk free even without putting much effort in hiding your own identity, because a police report will get nowhere since.

  1. Police does not have a international reach/jurisdiction.

  2. They will not spend much or any effort on investigating something that has caused such a small ammount of damage in lost revenue/cash/value.

  3. even if neccesary proof exists of the attacker's identity. Unless located within the jurisdiction of the police where the report was placed not much will happen because of point 2.

  4. Not many will care about people paying 15$/month for a botnet but rather focus in taking down the entire botnets which can span upto hundreds of thousands computers.

The only major risk by getting your own identity revealed/caught is getting DDoS'ed yourself and hated on the internet.

The only way to stop it as a regular ISP user is to set up a VPN or tunnel everything and after request a new IP address from your ISP because a VPN is useless once they already have your source IP. But sadly using a VPN/Proxy will always increase your delay/ping due to the law of physics.

EG gets a defloss, KP gets forced to play 4v5, Dignitas gets a postpone.

Seems fair.

6
xSora08•

Dignitas was ahead, the thing with EG was they were down significant gold and xp 17 mins into the game against a PL. They were also down by 1-2 towers at that point.

8
beenman500•

dude, dignitas were ahead BY THE SAME AMOUNT and it was 10 minutes in so it's even more stompy (not to mention they even had greedier picks). The difference is that dignitas had the problems, so you can't punish qpad for that

2
ghettosheepDota•

These decisions are always made in light of who disconnected.

A team that is ahead and then drops a player should almost never be given a default win

A team that is significantly behind and then drops a player should almost never be given a regame

These are matters of policy in place for obvious reasons. They also can't just postpone everything, they have a schedule and tons of games to play.

1
beenman500•

yeah I realize that. But it still sucks for dignitas

1
6camelsandahorse•

The rulings are really inconsistent, KP was ahead by a lot more than Dignitas were and didn't get a postpone. And although EG was behind by a lot, it's not fair that another team gets a postpone and they dont, because they did still have a chance.

I think the decisions from the tournament admins were really unprofessional. There should be set guidelines that get followed for connection issues. It's not like connection issues of some kind are that unlikely to happen that a need for a rule can't be foreseen.

1
rosvoranga•

Yeah that really sucks for EG =(

4
CasualRemark•

I've posted something like this multiple times now, but i guess it needs to be said again. Teams may not be using skype ingame to communicate. Skype is most likely being used as an ip grab. Not many players will stop using skype because it is ingrained into the competitive community.

If a team wants to contact a tournament admin they will probably use skype. The only way that players will stop using skype is if every admin/organizer, coaches, team managers, basically a majority of the people will switch to a different VOIP program that also does instant messaging.

edit: but really this shitty exploit still exists? man what a program

5
phantamines•

What I don't understand is why people use the god-awful program of skype over xfire, mumble, and of course vent.

1
CasualRemark•

Pro players most likely use it to contact their team managers, tournament admins/refs/organizers. While using other programs to do ingame communication.

1
Karnivore915•

I don't think it exists but, if I understand properly, sites that steal IPs use an older version of skype with the bug intact.

1
Fraye•

Pros and streamers in general need to do the following (note VPS/VPN is essentially using proxy):

Get a new IP now. You have dynamic IP right?

Never disclose your IP to anyone, for any reason, and when u do get a new afterwards (you do have dynamic IP right??? RIGHT????)

Setup a VPS (VPN but for specific programs instead of everything) for skype. After that get a new IP since skype will still have your IP recorded. This will make sure that your gaming won't have higher latency from VPN, but still protect you from skype being a retarded piece of shit.

ALSO PLEASE NOTE: Skype has a habit of IGNORING PROXY SETTINGS, when it has access to the internet without proxy. Therefore (as mentioned by destiny article) block skype's normal internet access via firewall (really essential...)

Also, for gods sake, to stop a ddos just change your IP. Prolonged DDoS really shouldn't be viable to do towards players with dynamic IP. DDoS is meant to be viable towards servers who have static IP/URL, not the transient users.

5
Marrond•

Shorter pro tip:

  1. Get dynamic IP

  2. Goddamn WHY you need Skype during playing? Delete that crap already...

  3. ???

  4. Profit!

-1
Fraye•

FALSE, STOP POSTING THIS SHIT.

Skype WILL RECORD AND REMEMBER YOUR IP EVEN WHEN OFFLINE, uninstalling or closing Skype will NOT protect you if you do not get a new ip AFTER going offline.

Just closing Skype while playing will not help JACK SHIT, you have to protect your IP from EVER BEING RECORDED.

-1
Marrond•

2.5) Call your ISP to change your IP.

Happy? Seriously, noone ever had such retarded problems like DOTA players do. Ever in the damn competitive gaming scene.

-1
Fraye•

Why would you call your ISP to change your IP, just use dynamic IP and force the router to renew it.

I keep seeing these "just stop using skype", but you have to switch IPs after disabling Skype anyway, otherwise it will still have your IP on it for anyone to get.

Not to mention the fact that there are no proper replacements for skype at the moment. Go make a better skype, then get everyone to use it and then u can talk.

1
Ragnarok022http://steamcommunity.com/id/LLaDmieH/•

I thought it is over... About a year or 1 1/2 years ago I watched only sc2 streams like Destiny and all others. I was live there when Destiny gets perma DDOS'd every day when he started streaming. At first it was only once a week, but then it got ridicolous. He never could finish a game. Never... The stream went black every 5 minutes.

It stopped when he figured out how to prevent that and who did it. Then I started playing dota 2, watched only dota 2 streams and tourneys and now this fucking thing is back.

Why are there always people who want to hinder others to have fun watching/playing? Why? I don't understand that...

It's like the bullys in school, they have fun hurting other people... That's not fun at all!

5
ivorywakefattie•

Just curious why do people still use skype? From my experience mumble and vent have always been more convenient and simple.

(Obviously for casters it makes more sense for skype but the players..?)

5
stanceLLLL•

players: communicate with friends/family/tournament admins/etc

6
CountJigglesworth•

It's free and it's pretty easy to use. It also makes sense for communicating with a lot of different people.

I do think it would make more sense for teams just to get Mumble servers setup. But, maybe people don't want to go out of their way to configure one, then get everyone to download the program, get their certificates, etc. It's not hard to do, but it takes longer than using Skype.

Another reason people use Skype is because you can vary your group with ease. Like, say you have 2 pros from different teams queued together on a stream, plus 3 of their friends. You could either make a group call on Skype, or have everyone go type in the mumble info, etc.

It's just 2 different chat models:

  • Skype = you select who you want and Skype gives you a "room" to talk on
  • Mumble/Vent = you make the "room" and have people independently connect to it
2
ConspicuousUsername•

You can also have a password protected room on a mumble server and don't give the password out to anyone. When you need some people in the room, you can move them into it without giving them the password. It's pretty easy too.

1
WinterAyars•

For that impromptu group scenario i would recommend Google Hangouts.

1
CountJigglesworth•

I think they tried using that on MAAD (it's a DotA podcast) and the quality was really awful. Not sure if it was just the program they were using to capture the sound or what, but Skype was sounding much better for the talkshow.

Personally, I've been wanting to try Google Hangouts but haven't gotten around to it. I'm generally impressed with anything Google does (even their unsuccessful products like Reader and Health -- still sad about those).

1
WinterAyars•

Mumble is way better as an option. Honestly, i think it's better for casters too. In almost every respect, an option like Mumble is superior.

1
akicita•

DDOS has been happening a lot in the WoW arena scene the past year. None of the 'top' pvp'ers use skype anymore. They mostly use google hangout. Only real solution is to change your ip through your isp and never ever log back onto skype again, and use google hangout.

5
beenman500•

well, there are other options than google hangout. Like raidcall (which makes sense as there are pumping like 150K into the dota scene this year). But ultimately the solution lies in deleting skype

2
WinterAyars•

Yeah, the first step is deleting Skype. This is what seems to be a big hangup for a lot of people, though...

1
akicita•

Yeah, from what I got from watching streams over the past year, they (people who were frequently targeted) had to take their router to their isp to get a new ip and then they would never log on skype again and would use google hangout/raidcall. Sucks that something that's so easy to do can mess things up so much :\

0
WinterAyars•

Really, it's Skype's fault. The vulnerability is there. If they did things properly this problem wouldn't exist, or wouldn't be as serious.

1
nastyplot•

Yeah I was wondering why all this DDOSing is only happening now, it wasn't happening during the Asian qualifiers of G-1 League...would anyone be able to explain this?

4

If its true that they are getting the IPs from Skype, it would be quite likely that most of the China and SEA teams don't use Skype much.
