Tornado - one month follow up

Advice and Tips

One month ago we were hit with a tornado. As of today, things are mostly back to normal in our new home.

Cash (paper or in savings) really is the biggest prep. I had a reasonable amount, as well as an unused high credit limit. I lucked up and had some stock vest at an opportune time which was nice too.

I’ve repurchased 70% of our losses )credit cards and cash), as well as the first/last/security/pet fees for our new home (cash only) I would recommend keeping at least 10k in liquid assets at the bare minimum. Preferred 4-8 months salary.

Biggest thing that would have helped me during all this was a truck, more tarps, and day laborers. I have the numbers of some that operate in the area now. More physical cash on hand would have been nice. I had about $1000, $2k would have been better and in multiple places.

More water proof bins would have been nice as well. I have a lot more totes now for that.

I swapped to using more 30 caliber ammo cans over the 50 caliber so it’s lighter to move.

I should have stored my medical supplies in something water tight. This has been rectified.
