looking for recommendations on network backup system that pulls from Windows PCs.

Help

I'm looking for good suggestions on how to implement a backup system that can handle the following:

  • backup service runs either in a docker or on a dedicated linux vm
  • service "pulls" backups from Windows and linux clients via SMB/SSH and stores them on a mounted linux share
  • supports incremental or differential backups in addition to full backups.

The goal is to put something together that's easily expandable and mostly zero-touch once its set up, and which can mitigate things like ransomware by not permitting the backup source systems write access to the backups directly.

I've tried using basic linux backup scripts for this in the past but always ran into an issue with the Windows clients not allowing the linux backup server to read the host filesystem attributes needed for incremental or differential syncs, so it would either grab all or nothing for every backup.

My linux knowledge is only maybe a 2/10 so would need something with good documentation or easy to configure out of the box.
