Ethical Consumption in local business?

Out of curiosity, for those who feel strongly about supporting local businesses in the community - how do we feel about taking into consideration who the owners have voted for and considering whether our dollars get spent there?

Does ethical consumption under capitalism exist in any way?

Edit : I'm talking LOCAL local, not corporations / chains.
