Platonic or not?
I'm aroace so I have no romantic interest in people but sometimes I find people pretty. I do nothing with that information but other times, I want to get close to that person.
I met a person once at a queer event and exchanged phone numbers and I honestly freaked out as soon as they left. I was anxious and didn't know how to talk to them outside of the event and my friends were sort of confused by my behavior. I was too. Turns out it was just social anxiety and I had perceived them to be more cooler than I was.
So because I freaked out, I didn't text more than once. But it kept eating at me and with some help from my counselor, I talked to them again. I sent them a photo of their favorite ship and called it an apology offering for not texting them. I told them social anxiety made it hard. To my surprise, they apologized too and said their mental health was also bad these days.
I told them not to apologize and that I should've tried harder to text and that I'd start saying hello to them at school. They said they would too.
We share a class but they sit a row in front of me and never turn their head back so there was no easy way to greeting during a class lecture. So instead, I stared every so often when they spoke. And I also, embarrassingly, tried to figure out the name of the person sitting beside them. I did so because I thought the back of her head was familiar because it reminded me of a different classmate who had a girlfriend.
And so, if it was the person who had a girlfriend, that meant my worry of them dating was unfounded and that the person I was interested in was single.
The girl turned her head and confirmed she was indeed the girl with a girlfriend. I cheered inside of my head.
Anyway, I managed to say bye and texted them after that it counted as a greeting in some way. They said they thought so too. And then, I sent them my new number. They said thanks and gave me their number after I asked. I told them I liked their outfit, that they should turn around so I can hi. I still feel nervous around them but I want to get to know them better. They seem really sweet and a part of me wants to be the one that matters to me them the most.
Now my question is, is this just the joy of getting to meet another person or I am developing queer platonic feelings? It's so hard to tell. I have friends that I think of in a completely platonic way but this feels like it's developing in a non- platonic manner.
Hopefully, over time, I can get to know them better and I'll figure it out. But I just wanted to make sure if I'm wrong about this not being platonic.
