Absolute newbie here! I'm interested in painting military and real-world minis. Need help in starting out.

Hey, I would like to start my journey in non-fantasy, non sci-fi mini painting. I know most people build models and then go on to paint them. What minis do I buy if I only want to paint? Which supplies do I need? Basically, please guide me in the right direction.
