Older Gen Z: what's your experience with professional language in the workplace?
98'er here. I recently switched from a career in education to a more "professional" environment and now have a job that involves speaking in meetings with high-level administrators. All of my knowledge of how meetings like that run came from movies/TV and I was under the impression that it would be a strictly professional environment; my experience has been very different.
I'm on one team that's 50/50 Gen X/Gen Z and more often than not, when asked for official assessments, us younger folk will say something along the lines of "bro is straight up crashing out right now." The older team members aren't as relaxed with their language, but will still use slang in meetings.
Another team is mostly Gen X, and don't use slang as much, but don't speak in strictly professional terms either.
I'm interested in hearing your experiences with "professional language," especially in the corporate world. Is lax communication the new normal?
