[Fate/Stay Night] So, did the whole "Holy Grail War" thing ever work out?

So, as far as I understand it, the Holy Grail War is a complex magical ritual. You summon Servants, the Servants get killed by some means, their souls get collected and used to create a path to the Root, which allows the winning Master to get themselves and their decendants access to that fancy True Magic they can use to flex on all the other mages that have to live with only having the less cool magecraft.

Except... well, did that plan ever actually work out? As far as I know, bascially every time its used, something gets in the way - everybody dies, or the Grail gets destroyed, or something else prevents the ritual from fulfilling its purpose. So, did the Holy Grail War ever actually just do what it was supposed to do?
