What to send to Congress
In the face of increasing tensions in our country, and the disestablishment of principles and laws that uphold our ideals, I am appalled that Congress, The Executive, and The Supreme Court, have not taken further action to remove the poison infecting American Politics.
We are not now, nor have we ever been, a nation founded for the express needs of any single group. We were founded on the beliefs that all are equal.
I ask you to look inside what is left of your souls, the parts you haven’t sold to the highest bidder, and see if your ideals align with those of the Republic for which we stand. Take note that the messages being pushed today are Antithetical to those found in our most treasured establishing documents.
Unfortunately, the actions of greed are nothing new in our government. Brig. Gen. James Stewart portrayed this in his 1939 film Mr. Smith goes to Washington. It can be traced further back to our earliest days as well, but it does not mean we should give in to those attempting to undermine our beliefs and create a theological ethno-state. One of the most recent linchpins to be undermined was during the Citizens United v FEC case, in which the government sided with self interest and greed, by allowing the legal bribery by corporations to succeed.
I ask that you look inside and take the actions necessary to stop evil. Show yourself to be of good moral character, and not just someone who hides behind their beliefs without ever acting according to their teachings. Stand against the rise of inequality and racism in our Country. Stand against the spread of authoritarians and oligarchs. End the silence surrounding Tiananmen Square. Stand against the threats and posturing against our allies. Call out Authoritarianism here and globally. Taiwan is what remains of China, and should be recognized internationally. Tibet is an independent nation and needs recognition. Any system with less than three parties is a failed system.
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me. —Martin Niemöller
“Let not any one pacify his conscience by the delusion that he can do no harm if he takes no part, and forms no opinion. Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing. He is not a good man who, without a protest, allows wrong to be committed in his name, and with the means which he helps to supply, because he will not trouble himself to use his mind on the subject.” ~ John Stuart Mill
