Rent, Lease, or Buy for Month-to-Month car in NYC?
I live in Brooklyn and need fairly regular access to a car as my dad lives down in Maryland and is preparing to enter hospice. I'd like to be able to go back and forth more easily. Not sure how long I'll need the car - but guessing at least 1-2 months and more likely 4-6. Not looking to own long term, I despise parking and the obligations of owning a car here.
I'm not looking for any specific make or model - whatever is the most affordable and nothing too big as I'll be parking on the street. I've used Kyte rentals a lot but they cost about $32 a day at the cheapest. I've looked at Turo and Flexcar which seem to have better pricing, but some mileage limits. Given I'll probably be driving back and forth every other week or so, I'd imagine I'll be putting ~2k miles a month on the vehicle.
Does anyone have any recommendations for the most economical and hassle free option? I already have a Geico policy which I use for Kyte with no issues. While I have the cash, I'm reluctant to buy a car because i don't want to deal with buying, registering, tax, etc. Noodling renting and returning from Kyte, but feels like there may be better and cheaper options. Just not sure where to start so recommendations would be welcome!
