Went to an iftar event and felt so alone

Seeking Support

I wanted advice on how to socialize with people better. I'm a pretty easygoing person and love speaking to others. I was invited to an iftar event and knew two other people attending, but I didn't know the rest of the girls.

When I first walked into the event, I was surprised by the number of people there, but I greeted everyone as soon as I walked in. I was excited to get to know more people and make friends, but it soon turned very awkward. People didn’t really know each other, but since I had my friend next to me, we could talk to people together, which made it easier.

My friend eventually moved to another part of the house, and I started a conversation with someone new. I was happy to speak with them. We chatted for a while, but then our conversation died down, and they started speaking to someone else. At this point, I looked around the room and saw that everyone else was having conversations, and I felt so out of place. I ended up going on my phone and just felt super lonely.

While everyone was still talking, I got up to pray Isha, and near the end of the prayer, I just wanted to break down and cry. I’ve never felt out of place in a room full of Muslims and females because these are the people I relate to the most and have the most in common with. I just couldn’t understand why I felt this way, and people just let me sit alone in the corner while I looked around the room, listening to their conversations. I still feel like crying when I look back at it now. I've never had this experience before at a Muslim event, and I ended up telling my friend how I felt, so we hung out together for the rest of the night.
