Thoughts on an Aussie social media app?
I've been hoping for a very long time for a decent alternative to Meta to arrive - in any form, from any country - but one just hasn't popped up. I don't want algorithms, I just want to see stuff from my friends, and maybe clubs and social groups (which are the only reason I still use Facebook). Give me an ad or two, I don't care, just as long as it's not one infinite scroll of vomit that none of my friends want to use anymore. Some groups I'm part of dislike Facebook and want to move away from it, but don't feel confident asking everyone to download an additional app for that group only. There's Discord I guess.
I think an app that would be happy to operate mainly or only in Australia would be in a uniquely good position to take some market share from Facebook and Instagram. It wouldn't suffer from impossible scaling issues if it got popular since the size of our population sets an effective upper limit to users, and less users would have to jump onboard for the app to gain a critical mass and overtake existing services.
I'm just wondering if there's any enthusiasm for this idea, especially given the increasing political hostility to Meta which I'm hoping will tip this concept over the line. Maybe existing alternatives are out there but I've tried looking and haven't found much.
