Religion with structure, values, and rituals, but without outdated lore?

General Advice

Hey everyone, this might sound weird, but I’ve been thinking seriously about joining a religion or a similar kind of structured community. I’m not looking for a faith in the traditional sense, more like something that offers a solid philosophy, moral guidance, a sense of belonging, rituals, and a connection to something bigger and historic. Something with a vibe, you know?

For example, I find some aspects of Mormon culture really appealing. The formal dress, the politeness, the weekly gatherings, the strong internal community, it all gives off this cult-like structure (in a positive way) that I actually admire. I’ve heard stories of how they’re so universally known for being peaceful and nice that even criminal groups in places like random Brazil neighborhoods controlled by gangs just leave them alone. That kind of cultural power through being wholesome? Impressive.

What doesn’t appeal to me, though, is the lore behind most mainstream religions, especially the Abrahamic ones. I just can’t believe in stuff like a man being crucified 2000 years ago and coming back to life, or that the ultimate truth of the universe centers around ancient Israel and Egypt. It all feels too human-made, too specific to one time and place, and kind of… cringe, to be honest. And don't get me started on the contradictions, the wars, the colonialism, or the scandals that plague many of these institutions historically.

I’m looking for something that:

  • Has a clear and structured philosophy or worldview
  • Emphasizes community, kindness, and rituals (like weekly gatherings, songs, shared values, etc.)
  • Has a “cleaner” history or is modern enough to not carry centuries of problematic baggage
  • Aligns with "liberal" values (I don't mean like "woke", but anti-authoritarian, no weird nationalism or regressive stances)
  • Feels like a real culture, not just a Reddit group or Discord server, but something with depth, aesthetic, maybe even buildings or art

Do things like this even exist? Are there any modern religions or organized communities founded in the 21st century that aren’t just sketchy cults? Or maybe even secular alternatives that still provide that same sense of structure, belonging, and shared purpose?

Also, just to be clear: I don’t have a problem with the irrational side of religion. In fact, I think there’s something kind of beautiful about surrendering to a force or fate that’s bigger than you. Life itself has irrational aspects, and I don’t need everything to be scientific or logical to find meaning in it.

Even though I live my life pretty much like any modern 25-year-old atheist in the 21st century, I’m not opposed to the idea of blind faith, if it’s part of something structured, inspiring, and purposeful. I’m actually okay with mystery and irrationality, as long as it feels transcendent rather than just dogmatic.
