Filing bankruptcy could affect my immigration status?
First of all I want to say that we don't have enough money to hire a lawyer, that's why I turn to Reddit where maybe someone has gone through the same situation
My husband and I got married last Friday 04/25/25 after 3 years of being together. I’m from South America and he is a US citizen so we are in the process of filling all the paperwork we need in order to change my immigration status.
My husband made very bad financial decisions in the past that caused him to go in a lot of debt and become homeless. Today the situation is a bit better, however, he is unable to pay for all his debt and wants to file for bankruptcy after we file all my immigration paperwork.
We had a free consultation with an immigration attorney and he said his bankruptcy shouldn’t be an issue considering that he is going to clear all his debt and therefore have more money to be my sponsor.
I just want to read some opinions and real experience that can guide us to the right thing and in a timely manner. We both agree that paying for my filling fees is a priority right now and that we can save enough to do the bankruptcy after and pay for the attorney fees.
