Large Nodule with Rapid Growth Doesn’t Always Mean Aggressive Cancer

28 year old female This is a long one, but I wanted to post my story here because when I was going through my waiting period I felt like I didn’t see any stories quite like mine and hope I can help someone else! My thyroid nodule was first discovered in 2022 by accident at a walk in clinic when I was being tested for strep throat. The walk in clinic doctor referred me to have an ultrasound of the nodule done due to the larger size she felt upon examination. I had the nodule ultrasound in June of 2023 and the nodule measured 4.0x2.1x2.5cm and was predominantly solid. I was referred for a FNA biopsy, which thankfully came back benign! I had been having regular ultrasounds done on the nodule every 6 months for follow up. In June 2024 my nodule measured 4.1x2.2x.2.5cm, so not much had changed and I was told by the radiologist that I could start doing ultrasounds every year since no growth or change to the nodule had been occurring. I planned on doing my yearly ultrasounds and moving on with my life, however in March of 2025, only 8 months after my last ultrasound, I started having issues swallowing food and constantly felt like I had a lump in the back of my throat. I then asked my doctor if I could go in for my ultrasound earlier since I was experiencing new symptoms. Lo and behold my nodule was now 4.9x2.3x2.7cm and now with increased vascularity. It grew almost a centimeter in one direction in less than 8 months! I was freaking out and referred for another FNA. I had the FNA last month (4/2025) and the results came back Bethesda 3 AUS: Abundant stripped nuclei and scattered oncocytic cells with mild atypia. Afirma results showed 50% chance of malignancy. I had my total thyroidectomy 2 weeks ago (5/25) and my final pathology report showed that my nodule measured 5cm in the greatest dimension and was a noninvasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary like nuclear features. Just wanted to put this out there in case someone else also has a large nodule that has seen rapid growth in a short period of time, it doesn’t always mean it’s going to be an aggressive form of thyroid cancer. I know this is where my mind definitely went when I was in my waiting period. Not all good news however, a much smaller 1.2cm nodule was below my 5cm nodule and this other nodule in fact was papillary thyroid carcinoma. I am feeling very grateful though! I believe it wasn’t a coincidence or luck that we found the smaller cancerous nodule. I believe God flagged the bigger nodule with symptoms so I would be able to get the smaller cancerous nodule removed before we ever knew it was an issue!
