My mom always assumes the worst about the guys I like and it’s starting to really bother me
I (F) have this crush who’s been over to my house twice, and everything seemed fine at first — my mom was cool with him. He was supposed to come over again on Memorial Day, but he didn’t because he was spending time with his family and also had the flu. I didn’t tell my mom the full reason why he couldn’t come over, because I knew she’d just assume he was lying or making excuses.
Sure enough, when he didn’t show, she completely switched up. She texted me basically saying he doesn’t have to come back if I don’t want him to, and then sent me a TikTok that was roasting him — which just felt super disrespectful. I get that she’s probably trying to protect me, and I understand where it’s coming from a little because a past guy I liked flaked on plans too, and she felt like he just found someone better to hang out with.
But the thing is, this new guy hasn’t done anything shady. He was sick. It was a holiday. I feel like I’m constantly walking on eggshells around my mom when it comes to my relationships, because the second something isn’t perfect, she just jumps to conclusions and starts tearing them down.
Has anyone else dealt with something like this? How do you handle it when your parent is super quick to judge your love life, even when nothing bad has really happened?
