Summer vacation ideas? resorts?

Hi there all

We are new to the uk - from the southern hemisphere - and summer is fast approaching. We would like to make the most of the proximity to Europe for a summer vacation. Anyone have any great recommendations for a holiday spot. Going late August. We have two kids 5 and 7. Wondering if we should do a resort for the ease of it all?

Thank you so much
