GRRM on Resurrected POV Characters (Spoilers Extended)

EXTENDED

Background

In an SSM (So Spake Martin) from back in 2000 (right after ASOS came out), GRRM was asked about Catelyn Stark returning as a POV after her "death" at the Red Wedding:

Question: The introduction of a revived Cat in the epilogue caused some dispute on the board. (BTW, after a few awkward meanderings on what exactly to call this 'revenant', we've dubbed her 'UnCat'. Some thought it was fine, some thought it cheapens the plot to use this device.
And some, like myself, would withhold judgement, until we see where you're going with this character. My question is whether Cat is exactly the same person now as she was just before her throat was cut (beyond the physical deterioration, I mean), or whether she has changed.

GRRM: Death does change a person. No, I do not think Catelyn is as she was, no more than Lord Beric...

And by the way, there will no Catelyn POVs in future volumes, which may tell you something. -SSM, UnCat: 23 August 2000

while noting the context of the question, I thought it would be interesting if we took this statement and applied it to other POV characters who have been/may be resurrected.

Jon Snow

While I have seen arguments that Jon isn't going to die, I think that it has been all building up to Jon's physical death (his consciousness will likely remain alive inside Ghost) after what happens to him at the mutiny at castle black:

Jon fell to his knees. He found the dagger's hilt and wrenched it free. In the cold night air the wound was smoking. "Ghost," he whispered. Pain washed over him. Stick them with the pointy end. When the third dagger took him between the shoulder blades, he gave a grunt and fell face-first into the snow. He never felt the fourth knife. Only the cold … -ADWD, Jon XIII

So while it may be possible that GRRM wants to continue his trend of not having a king POV during the War of the Five Kings, no dragon POVs in the Dance of the Dragons II, etc. I think it is more likely that Jon's consciousness remains inside Ghost (Ghost POV?) for a portion of TWoW for when Jon is resurrected (changed but still a POV).

Victarion Greyjoy

Victarion is a little more interesting to discuss than Jon Snow, not only because he doesn't have the ability to warg an animal if he dies, but also because he would be a contradiction here. The theory is that Victarion is already dead:

“Did the Vole speak true? You saw my death?”
“That, and more.”
“Where? When? Will I die in battle?” His good hand opened and closed. “If you lie to me, I will split your head open like a melon and let the monkeys eat your brains.”
“Your death is with us now, my lord. Give me your hand.”
“My hand. What do you know of my hand?” -ADWD, The Iron Suitor

and:

“Even the smallest scratch can prove mortal, lord Captain, but if you will allow me, I will heal this. I will need a blade. Silver would be best, but iron will serve. A brazier as well. I must needs light a fire. There will be pain. Terrible pain, such as you have never known. But when we are done, your hand will be returned to you.”
They are all the same, these magic men. The mouse warned me of pain as well. “I am ironborn, priest. I laugh at pain. You will have what you require … but if you fail, and my hand is not healed, I will cut your throat myself and give you to the sea.”
Moqorro bowed, his dark eyes shining. “So be it.”
The iron captain was not seen again that day, but as the hours passed the crew of his Iron Victory reported hearing the sound of wild laughter coming from the captain’s cabin, laughter deep and dark and mad, and when Longwater Pyke and Wulfe One-Eye tried the cabin door they found it barred. Later singing was heard, a strange high wailing song in a tongue the maester said was High Valyrian. That was when the monkeys left the ship, screeching as they leapt into the water.
Come sunset, as the sea turned black as ink and the swollen sun tinted the sky a deep and bloody red, Victarion came back on deck. He was naked from the waist up, his left arm blood to the elbow. As his crew gathered, whispering and trading glances, he raised a charred and blackened hand. Wisps of dark smoke rose from his fingers as he pointed at the maester. “That one. Cut his throat and throw him in the sea, and the winds will favor us all the way to Meereen.” Moqorro had seen that in his fires. He had seen the wench wed too, but what of it? She would not be the first woman Victarion Greyjoy had made a widow. - ADWD, The Iron Suitor

and while I do not agree with this theory, there are at least enough parallels between this and other resurrection events that I felt it was worth mentioning.

We should also take in to account the fact that GRRM has said there is a "method to his madness" with the POV name change from a title to name and we see the Victarion progression go:

  • The Iron Captain (AFFC)
  • The Reaver (AFFC)
  • The Iron Suitor (ADWD) (chapter ends with Moqorro healing his hand)
  • Victarion (ADWD)

as well as the fact that GRRM originally intended Victarion to die in his last AFFC chapter.

Other

GRRM has stated (as recently as 2024) that he does not plan on adding anymore POVs. Prior to that he has stated that we should "take our bets" as the # is going to start declining. With that in mind I wouldn't expect a new POV to pop up and then die and get resurrected. That said we do have 19 other POVs that are currently alive (as well as 3 others that could technically be resurrected not including Prologue/Epilogue).

"Could you bring back a man without a head?" Arya asked. "Just the once, not six times. Could you?"
"I have no magic, child. Only prayers. That first time, his lordship had a hole right through him and blood in his mouth, I knew there was no hope. So when his poor torn chest stopped moving, I gave him the good god's own kiss to send him on his way. I filled my mouth with fire and breathed the flames inside him, down his throat to lungs and heart and soul. The last kiss it is called, and many a time I saw the old priests bestow it on the Lord's servants as they died. I had given it a time or two myself, as all priests must. But never before had I felt a dead man shudder as the fire filled him, nor seen his eyes come open. It was not me who raised him, my lady. It was the Lord. R'hllor is not done with him yet. Life is warmth, and warmth is fire, and fire is God's and God's alone."
Arya felt tears well in her eyes. Thoros used a lot of words, but all they meant was no, that much she understood. -ASOS, Arya VII

TLDR: Right after ASOS was published, GRM's stated that Cat would not have anymore POVs and that should tell the reader something. While the context for GRRM's answer was with regards to Lady Stoneheart as a plot device and if she was different post death/resurrection, it is possible that he was just referring to Cat (not being the same). That said it is possible he was referring to resurrection in general, so I took a look at two possible cases (Jon Snow and Victarion Greyjoy. Jon Snow is a special case since he can warg Ghost while his human body is dead (the ADWD seemingly was a major setup for this), Victarion on the other hand is a cool/interesting theory but I don't think was an actual death.
