Took 50mg DPH and Had the Most Intense Trip of My Life
I took 50mg of diphenhydramine at 5:42 PM. Not 5:40. Not 5:45. I remember the exact time because I felt it deserved ritual precision. I placed the two pink pills on my tongue like holy wafers and swallowed them with lukewarm tap water. That’s when everything began to unravel.
At first, nothing happened. Rookie mistake—I let my guard down. I was scrolling Reddit when I heard it: a creak. Not a regular floor creak. A deliberate one. I turned slowly. Nothing. But it creaked again. I looked at the wall and whispered,
"If you’re real, give me a sign."
The wall did not respond. That’s how I knew it was listening.
Roughly twenty minutes in, my cat blinked twice in rapid succession. She never does that. I stared at her. She stared back. I could tell she was trying to warn me, but her feline tongue was cursed by silence. I mouthed, “I understand,” and she walked away. The message was clear.
Confused and afraid, I went to the kitchen. The fridge was humming in a lower tone than usual. Ominous. I opened it. Inside, in the dead center of the middle shelf, sat a single Kraft Single. Unwrapped. Alone. I hadn’t bought Kraft Singles since 2021. I stared at it for what felt like hours. It stared back. My hand trembled as I reached for it, but I stopped, it didn’t feel safe.
I grabbed a banana instead. As I peeled it, the peel fell open in one clean motion. No strings. No effort. That’s when I knew I was no longer in control.
Back in the living room, I sat on the couch. My body sank into the cushions too comfortably. Like the couch was expecting me. The TV remote was exactly where I left it. Too exactly. I turned on the news to ground myself, but the anchor looked directly into the camera and said, “And now, a reminder: you did this to yourself.” I screamed. My neighbor’s dog barked. I'm sure that was not a coincidence.
I went to the bathroom to splash water on my face. My reflection looked exactly like me, which made me suspicious. I leaned in and whispered, “You can’t fool me.” He did not reply. He just stood there. Mocking. Breathing when I breathed. I slammed the cabinet door and flushed the toilet to reassert dominance.
At some point, I tried eating a granola bar, but it tasted like exactly what it was supposed to taste like, which sent me into a spiral. What else in my life was exactly what it claimed to be?
I eventually collapsed onto my bed, pulled the covers up to my chin, and waited for the Hat Man. He never came. Coward.
